Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the infectiously optimistic voice that has earned Brady a cult following for her syndicated "Vows" column in the New York Times, she recounts more "how they met and fell in love" anecdotes in this follow-up to her first book, Vows. Brady clearly admires the protagonists of these true-life fairy talesAwhom she calls "survivors" of bad relationships, widowhood, disabilityAand tells of their experiences in loving detail. The stories are the real reason to read the book, since there's nothing new about these "love lessons": that persistence and patience pay off; that emotionally it's riskier sometimes not to take risks; that love may be found in the least likely of places, or that it may go unnoticed for some time. While love may be easiest to evoke by comparing it to other experiences, at times the narrative is packed with too much metaphoric imagery. The poetry should have been reigned in a bit more in passages such as: "her spirit was as natural and clear as a Vermont stream. Eddy was the rough ocean." The writing improves when the author reminisces about attending dancing school at age 12 and her parents' tempestuous 50-year marriage. Perhaps "Vows" enthusiastsAand othersAwill someday enjoy a memoir by this chronicler of others' nuptials. Agent, Linda Chester. Author tour.

This book was excellent! Lois Smith Brady is really a treat to read. I would highly recommend the book as a gift for newly engaged couples or for married couples. Inspiring stories for singles - many hopeful stories about finding love in the most unusual places. All of the stories are funny, insightful and touching in some way!

I have never written a review, but just started reading this book and had to tell others how great it is. It makes you feel so cozy and happy. I've been through some tough times in love recently and it reminded me to persevere. I have been learning lessons from each story. The book is so beautifully written and the stories so wonderful. If you're having a hard time or want to remember why you got married in the first place, or are thinking about marriage, or just want to read some heartwarming love stories, this is the book for you. I loved it! Thank you Lois Smith Brady for writing it!!!!

I couldn't put down this book. It is, by FAR, the best book I've read on love. Lois Smith-Brady is a beautiful writer who will keep you captivated throughout her twelve stories on real life love. These stories (along with her wonderful interpretations) will make you understand (like you never have before) what love really is. Read it, Read it, Read it!!!!!

I've been reading Brady's column in the NYT for the past decade it seems, and this book even surpasses her columns, which are pure delight. No one can write about love like Brady; no one even comes close to having her sense of humour about it, or her sense of the glorious magic that fills us when we are in love.

I've read many memoirs, but this book which intertwines the author's own romantic experiences, as well as those of her family -- and eleven other great stories -- is by far the best of this genre. After I finished the chapter on her parents' love story, I immediately called my mother, asking for details about how she fell in love with my dad. This book reminded me that love comes in so many forms, and it should be celebrated and passed on from one generation to the next.

Like real life Harrys meeting Sallys! These short stories are so remarkably moving, so magical and inspiring and funny its difficult to believe they could be true. But Brady is such a beautiful writer, that each story came to life in my heart. I couldn't put this down.

This is a wonderful book. I was sorry that it had to end and cannot wait for Lois SMith Brady's next installment of stories. I too am a devoted fan of Brady's New York Times Vows column -- I look forward to it every weekend. It offers some of the best journalism out there -- Studs Turkel meets Anna Quindlin. This is the best of Lois' best and then some. Love Lessons makes me have hope for love and made find love in every corner of my life.
