Book Description

April 20, 2009
Love might be a many-splendored thing. Sex and the City is another. Since letters from this book were read in bed by Carrie Bradshaw with (you guessed it) Mr. Big in the new hit movie, this has become an immediate classic and a "must read" for all those longing for love or searching for the right words to say. An excerpt that was read in the movie: "Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, now and then joyfully, then sadly, waiting to learn whether or not fate will hear us - I can live only wholly with you or not at all - Yes, I am resolved to wander so long away from you until I can fly to your arms and say that I am really at home with you, and can send my soul enwrapped in you into the land of spirits - Yes, unhappily it must be so - You will be the more contained since you know my fidelity to you. No one else can ever possess my heart - never - never - Oh God, why must one be parted from one whom one so loves. And yet my life in V is now a wretched life - Your love makes me at once the happiest and the unhappiest of men - At my age I need a steady, quiet life - can that be so in our connection? My angel, I have just been told that the mailcoach goes every day - therefore I must close at once so that you may receive the letter at once - Be calm, only by a calm consideration of our existence can we achieve our purpose to live together - Be calm - love me - today - yesterday - what tearful longings for you - you - you - my life - my all - farewell. Oh continue to love me - never misjudge the most faithful heart of your beloved. ever thine. ever mine. ever ours." Originally published in 1924, this classic collection of love letters includes timeless contributions from the likes of Beethoven, Keats, Lord Byron, Napoleon, Voltaire, Rousseau and Mozart, among many other.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's the 'real deal'!, June 24, 2008
This review is from: Love Letters of Great Men (Paperback)
Having seen the 'Sex and the City' movie twice now- I can affirm that the poem which Carrie read aloud was an excerpt from Beethoven's 'Immortal Beloved'.

'Immortal Beloved' is just one of many beautiful letters in this book. I can only speculate that in the movie, the title of the book was shortened to "Love Letters of Great Men..."; as the "and Women" part likely did not jive with the plot.

This book is beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chivalry Revival, July 20, 2008
This review is from: Love Letters of Great Men (Paperback)
Being a collector of books, I've seen many frauds in my day. This book doesn't claim to be anything other than exactly what it is- a fabulous read that just happens to have been given mention in a box-office topping movie.

My wife insisted that I join her in viewing this blockbuster, (I was the only man in the theatre), and I knew instantly the poem that Carrie was quoting from. ('Immortal Beloved', Beethoven)

When my wife and I rode home, she laid into me about the decline of chivalry, the decline of letter writing, the decline of...you get the idea. So- in an attempt to sate her, and show her that all of the above can and do still exist; I purchased this book.

Trust me when I tell you- it was worth its weight in gold. Additionally, as one who spends a great deal of time in the literary world, I can say that this book is in fact, the one from the movie.
