Timelessl Love Letters, April 21, 2009
This review is from: Love Letters from Great Men: Like Vincent Van Gogh, Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, and many More (Paperback)
Author of award-winnin How to Negotiate Like a Pro: 41 Rules for Resolving Disputes and How to Mediate Like a Pro: 42 Rules for Mediating Disputes
I love this book of letters. At first I turned to some of my favorite authors, painters and politicians. When talking about his unrequited love for his cousin, who said "no, never, never." VAn Gogh writes to his brother, "I lock upon 'no,never, never' as a block of ice which I press to my heart to thaw." James Joyce writes to his Nora, "When I am with you. I leave aside my contemtuous, suspicious nature." Mark Twain writes to his future wife, "Out of the depths of my happy heart wells a great tide of love and prayer for this priceless treasure that is confided to my life-long keeping."
I check out Lord Byron and, with his reputation, I am not surprised that there are love letters to three women: Caroline Lamb, Annabella, and Teresa.
One of the most interesting letters, from an historical perspective, is the letter from Henry 8th to Anne Boleyn. He is obviously obsessed by her. Knowing that Anne, the future mother of Queen Elizabeth, would later be beheaded shows how fleeting love can be.
This book is a treasure. It makes one yearn for the old days without twitter, facebook, and computers when people wrote letters the old-fashioned way.
I give this book five stars and recommend it highly. It is a book for savoring the written word and seeing a glimpse into many famous men who are known for other accomplishments.

Why can't more guys be like these men?, May 15, 2009
This review is from: Love Letters from Great Men: Like Vincent Van Gogh, Mark Twain, Lewis Carroll, and many More (Paperback)
I'm a sucker for romance and this book suits me just right. It's full of letters--some short notes, some lengthy--from men throughout history to their wives, mistresses, long lost loves, and lovers they hope to woo. I was impressed by the range of writers and time periods. Some of the letters are from as early as the first century. They go up through the 1900's. The "great men" are not only famous war heroes, but include famous writers, poets, musicians, and artists.
The layout of the book makes each letter feel individual and personal, like you're reading through a stack of letters, not just transcripts in a book. It's very well done and makes the experience or reading enjoyable. I feel like I have my own little box of love letters in this book.
