Editorial Reviews

Although not usually as highly regarded as several of the albums that preceded it nor several that came later, Love Letters still has much with which to commend it. Not least there is Julies vocal, a sultry voice that could turn almost anything into a breathless exclamation of love and desire. Nowhere is this better exemplified than on Come On-A My House, originally little more than a novelty item by Rosemary Clooney but which when performed by Julie is a sensual invitation to drop whatever you are doing and make your way over.

2.0 out of 5 stars one of the very few losers among Julie's albums March 31, 2013
Love Letters has always been viewed unfavorably as even the Amazon blurb here admits. The original cover was a major disappointment as it was a pedestrian pencil sketch of Julie. It's not the cover pictured here as the vendor was wise enough to change it. The song selection was very poor as well. Never on Sunday?? Good grief I don't know how they convinced Julie to sing that one. Other misfires are I Love You Porgy, Fascination, Come On A My House. The arrangements provide just about zero interest without being amateurish. In fact there is no memorable song on the album although Julie doesn't sing badly. To cap things off the recording is very metallic and offputting with reverb and other studio dial twiddling. Not a horrible record just completely forgettable and a Love Letter should never be that. One and a half stars. I subjectively rate this as #27 of her 30 original albums. The original cover art is another zero without going into negative territory. I rate it as #28. I'm not sure what anyone was thinking while they were making this one. Fortunately her next album Love on the Rocks was excellent.
