The Lowest of the Low !,
By Robert (Boise, ID USA) - See all my reviews

Yes, this is it! About as low as one can possibly sink... An album of Pat Boone 'RE-Records'! I bought this CD for Pat's (uniquely caucasian) versions of 'Tutti Frutti', 'Ain't That A Shame' and 'Jambalaya'. Imagine my amazement when I slid the CD in and heard that they had actually gone to the expense and trouble of RE-RECORDING THEM ! UNBELIEVABLE! I can't imagine anyone who would want to buy this on purpose (unless you're running some type of detention center where they play absolutely horrible music to punish teen offenders--(for which this CD is ideally suited.. ). Stay away from this one...

Reality Check..!,

Anyone wanting Pat's "original" recordings of "Love Letters In The Sand", "Long Tall Sally", etc. will be disappointed because the songs here are rerecordings. That's not to say that they are bad. Pat Boone, like Bing Crosby, has a velvetty-smooth baritone voice that flows over you like molasses and this cd is mainly a country album with a few "greatest hits" thrown in. There is no information about these recordings in the insert but they sound very much like the music being recorded in Nashville circa the early 70s. Pat's backing band are obviously seasoned pros who could do this stuff in their sleep and at times it may sound just a little TOO slick. I believe that it is the great Johnny Gimble who Pat calls out to (for a fiddle solo) in "Jambalaya". "You Lay So Easy On My Mind" has a distinct Charlie Rich flavor. All in all, this cd is excellent and I am glad I bought it. My only complaint would be the lack of musician and recording date information. Great cover shot of Pat looking very much like Cool Hand Luke.
So, if you are a pedantic 50s pop music collector, this is not for you.... but for Pat Boone fans it's another little gem. Hey, even Bing Crosby rerecorded his hits, and so did Elvis. |
