This is a John Jakes type novel, a "coming of age" story of two people: Daniel, a young Continental soldier, and Penelope, a spirited but complicated girl whose attraction for a handsome British officer leads her to become a spy. Together, Daniel and Penelope join forces in a mission that will determine the fate of the war. The shadow of the gallows hangs over them as they risk their lives to gather the information so desperately needed by General Washington. The ending, however, comes as a shocking surprise.
The singular focus of this book gives us new insight on the life and times of our country's early beginnings. The characters are unusual, different, and hold promise for the future as characters of a sequel.
