5.0 out of 5 stars Goth rock reaches the level of maturity
While Jay Aston continues in his attempts to reach true pop-stardom, his brother Michael shows that there is far more to life than simple pop rubbish. 1.0 out of 5 stars This is a sham.
What this album has got to do with Gene Loves Jezebel {Amazon, do some research please!} is far beyond the grasp of even the tiniest ego. Poor songs, appalling musicianship & Michael Aston has none of his brother Jay's vocal talent. He just doesn't seem to realize that he's tone deaf. Really. Someone should let him know that Gene Loves Jezebel has a long proud history...

While Jay Aston continues in his attempts to reach true pop-stardom, his brother Michael shows that there is far more to life than simple pop rubbish. Returning to the goth roots that spawned the band to begin with, Michael shows a level of experience and growth that may very well take Gene Loves Jezebel into a level of poetic quality that although not commercial can definetly be called timeless. Like Cohen and Dylan, Michael Aston has achieved a level of artistry that will last for generations to come. Goth rock redefined for the better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suffering at its finest, July 2, 1999

OK, everyone chill on the whole Michael vs Jay thing. It's not worth it. They are both great musicians. This album is fantastic. While it is NOT truly a GLJ album, the songs are very diverse and eloquent. I bought this album when I saw them live a couple years ago at Dome Room in Chicago. I got on stage with them for 'Desire' and walked on wholly ground. They seemed to get along and promised a new album soon to follow. Aparently, that is not the case as both have new albums out. They are both using the GLJ name and I guess they are both GLJ. So, I say it's ok. The songs on Michael's record speak of a lot of pain and the need to be forgiven. The beauty of the sound speaks for itself. The lyrics are as honest as I've ever heard. Talent and honesty run throughout this incredible album and talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Brother Grimm, August 25, 2004
This review is from: Love Lies Bleeding (Audio CD)
This is by far the best solo album by Michael Aston that I've heard yet. Mind you I've only managed to get my hands on three of them so far. Unlike the disappointing Edith Grove release and the too ponderous GIVING UP THE GHOST, this record really moves quick, hard and gracefully. Songs like "Love Lies Bleeding", "Who Will Survive You", "Loving You Is The Best Revenge" and "Sorry(Suzan)" are the prime movers here. The music is energetic and moody, the lyrics are sound and invigorating and hearken back to the GLJ heydays. While "Prairie Song" and "Lifting The Vale" are the blood-renderings that you would expect to shround such intensity. I guess you could call them cathartic, but beautiful seems more apropos. "Give My Regards To Ray" is an obvious slap at Jay and is what it is. I stay away from the internet lunacy, back-biting and side-taking that seems to have followed the split and concentrate on the music. It, along with "The Lion In Your Eyes" are solid songs and fill out the disc rather nicely. "Joyrider 2000" and "Necromancing" seem more geared toward the GIVING UP THE GHOST ambience and are easily skipped over to get back to the meat of what makes this record so successful.

I'm disappointed to see silly spiteful reviews from individuals with axes to grind. Gene Loves Jezebel is quite obviously Michaels vision. the bland records made in his absence are evidence enough. This is a starling and revelatory album. The songs are both moving and SMART! I must admit, I;ve been a fan ever since I heard Why me, why this, Why now his solo album. I cheched out the older stuff, I can hear where perry Farrel got his chops fromsongs like SHAME (Immigrant) and Bruise (Promise). I must rec ommend this record/Artist. EXTRAORDINARY!

Forget the naysayers and agendas Discover GENIUS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Lies Bleeding is Fabulous, June 13, 1999

Founding member Michael aston has made a stunning album with the band that proves not only is there life after brothers J's departure but the silly redundant cliches and posturings of old glammy G.L.J. are gone with his departure in 97'... This is a truly remarkable record, passionate, melodic and lyrically quite unprecedented in the G.L.J. catologue, tho' a direct descendant would be 'Immigrant'. Satisfying on every level. The album will be available nationally in July on Triple x records, prepare to be astonished!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Aston is a genius, October 9, 2007
This review is from: Love Lies Bleeding (Audio CD)
I bought this album online when it was only just released. It reminds me of the heydays of gothic music. Bands like Play Dead and Sisters of Mercy. This album has an energy and direction that will make you play it over and over. From the first song "Love lies bleeding" to "Alive within" there is such an intensity and beauty. The last song "Lifting the Vale" is a tremendous ballad accompanied by an ethereal guitar and piano. Yes I have been drinking again myself. There is an honesty and reality in the lyrics that you won't find in any kind of grunge album. If the emo kids listened to this they probably wouldn't feel so sorry for themselves. It's sad, courageous, happy, energetic, almost religious.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is possible to recapture your golden years, June 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Lies Bleeding (Audio CD)
While the 80s are over that doesn't mean you have to throw out your memories along with your leg warmers. Michael Aston has shown with Love Lies Bleeding, soon to be released, that the heart of Gene Loves Jezebel is still beating albeit a bit battered. The dark hypnotic lyrics and sounds of Discover, Immigrant and Promise are all here with a new twist, after all its the 90s now. While there maybe argument among the fans as to who has what right, Love Lies Bleeding shows that no matter the arguments the music is still Gene Loves Jezebel. So check it out and see if you dont find your Love Lies Bleeding for more GLJ.

Really. Someone should let him know that Gene Loves Jezebel has a long proud history & he can't rewrite the past with such limited resources. Really sad to see, how his jealousy has reduced him to such desperate measures. It must be tough raising a family & having to pretend your the guy who sang "Desire." One listen {it's painful, believe me.} to this sorry excuse of a record & you'll be glad that your not Michael Aston. An Infintile & clumsily executed {Jesus couldn't have saved this} attempt at being "Poetic" & artful. Keep well away & buy the real thing. Who's in the band? The jacket gives the impression that it's Gene Loves Jezebel. It most certainly is not. -55 stars.
