A must-read humorous romance!,
This review is from: Love Lies (CD-ROM)
Victor Lawrence, an extremely wealthy, strait-laced lawyer, is brought to his knees during his first meeting with quirky reporter Ashley Lorentz. Literally. Looking for a tax break, Victor is at the Carlson-Musch Institute for Mental Health with a hefty donation in mind. Despite thinking Ashley is an patient escaping in a reckless wheelchair, Victor cant fight his growing attraction to the beautiful and honest woman. Ashley cant believe her luck! While trying to evade the doctor threatening to throw her out of the Institute for riling up the patients, she runs into a handsome and classy man who seems interested in her. Even though she cant keep her mouth shut, he seems to like it. Their relationship had progressed to several lunches a week by the time he introduces Ashley to Derik Mann, his best friend and sensei and aikido partner. During their workout, Victor is injured with a possible concussion. Ashley, halfway in love with him and feeling partly responsible for his injury, volunteers to care for him. However, while his fever rages, Victor unconsciously tears down the fragile walls of Ashleys trust, causing her to run and hide. Their encounter produces more than their break-up, it also results in Ashleys pregnancy. After finding her, Victor can only think of one way to get back into her life, bluffing her into marriage. Ashley is still wary of trusting Vic, although she finds it harder to fight her love and attraction for him. Both are enthusiastic about their pregnancy, a miracle that unites husband and wife as nothing else can. While LOVE LIES does follow the traditional rules of romance, it also diverts from these rules slightly. It touches upon the subjects of rape, the homeless, an orphans sense of abandonment and Vics ambiguous feelings about his ex-wife. LOVE LIES thoroughly involves the reader on a roller-coaster ride of emotions, leaving the reader enthralled and hungry for more. Ashleys struggles with trust and love are convincing and realistically portrayed, allowing the reader to relate to her troubles on a personal level. LOVE LIES is a must-read for all romance fans; dont miss it! MaryJanice Davidson is a name for readers to remember while looking for a refreshing new voice and a captivating read! - Julie Shininger

MaryJanice Davidson is one of my favourite authors - I just love her creative stories, her quirky characters and sense of humour. LOVE LIES is an unusual mix of funny and heartbreaking and I enjoyed it very much. Victor Lawrence is a wealthy lawyer who meets quirky Ashley Lorentz while visiting a psychiatric hospital that he endows. He initially thinks that she is a patient but finds himself attracted to her anyway. She's sassy, funny and quick and she is entirely unimpressed by Victor and his millions - he's never met anyone quite like her before. Victor is divorced from his cold, witch of a first wife who never really loved Victor and certainly never wanted kids (Victor desperately does). Ashley is the exact opposite of Crystal - warm, funny and looking forward to children someday (she never knew her own parents, growing up in foster care). Though she doesn't show it outwardly, Ashley is indeed impressed with Victor - he's gorgeous, witty, urbane - could he possibly be interested in a nobody like her? Once Victor determines that Ashley is not a patient, but a journalist who visits her friend Jeannie at the hospital, they begin seeing each other meeting for lunches and dinners and quickly falling hard for one another (they're so cute together!). While working out with his Aikido partner Derik, Victor receives a blow to the head and a concussion. Ashley offers to stay the night with him to take care of him and ensure that his condition doesn't worsen. During the night, Victor initiates sex with Ashley and she is slightly willing (though they had not yet gotten that far in their relationship) until she realizes that he is feverish and calling her by his ex-wife's name. Unfortunately he is so out of it she cannot get him to stop. Ashley is devastated; Victor remembers nothing. But he knows something is wrong when Ashley suddenly disappears from his life. Once Victor realizes what happened that fateful night, he is as desperate to get Ashley back as she is to avoid him. But when he discovers that she is pregnant he bluffs (some might say bullies or blackmails) her into marrying him so that he can keep her close while he tries to win her back. He tries everything to regain her love and trust but Ashley is still emotionally (and physically) wary of him and keeps him at a distance. She still loves and desires him but feels that she shouldn't after what happened (she should hate him - right?). Meanwhile, they prepare for the birth of their child (which both are thrilled about) and adjust to sharing a home and being married. Can Victor win her back? Can Ashley forgive him and put the past behind her? Though other reviews have used the "R" word (rape) to describe what happened, I can't call it that. He was, afterall out of his head at the time. There was no desire to hurt her on his part and his remorse and guilt afterwards were strong. But at the same time, one can sympathize with Ashley's confusion and emotional turmoil. I think I would have forgiven Victor sooner than Ashley (he's just so sweet - almost too good to be true!)- she hangs onto her resentment just a touch too long for me given what happened. The relationship between Victor and Ashley is really enjoyable to watch as he tries to give her everything (even things she doesn't want!) to win her while she tries valiantly not to take them. And I loved their word play back and forth - very snappy and funny (it cracked me up when Ashley decided to hyphenate her last name making her Ashley Lorentz-Lawrence!). A very sweet and poignant and funny read and very highly recommended!

I'm a fan of MJD, but that being said, this one was not worth the time it took to read it. As the plots already been recounted, I'll just say this: While I could get past the first sex scene-that one I wouldn't have called rape, more buyers remorse after he calls her by his ex's name during his delirium(she doesn't seem to care he's so sick he can't tell her from a whole in the wall, but when he calles his ex-wife's name well the NERVE!!!)However after much deception on both parts they wind up married and he forces her to have sex-using lubricant so he doesn't HURT her(yeah ok sure) numerous times, which to me is rape. She's still attracted to him(is that why everyone's saying it's NOT rape-because she thinks he's hot? or because when he's being nice outside of the bedroom she sees good qualities? really?)and eventually they fall in love and happily ever after is assured. I was left disappointed in the main characters and very dissatisfied with the story. Honestly the two best friends seemed more interesting to me about 1/2 way through.
