5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one marriage book everyone should read!
I learned more about building and maintaining a happy marriage from this book than from all the other marriage books I've read combined, and I've read them all. This book is funny, easy to read, and filled with practical, solid christian advise. 2.0 out of 5 stars Negative tone and little practical advice
Although I've always enjoyed listening to Dr. Dobson and was looking forward to this book, I have to disagree with many of the other reviewers and say that I was very disappointed. He spends the greater part of every chapter discussing in detail specific problems that he knows a marriage will face (interspersed with several advertisements for his other books) but...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the one marriage book everyone should read!, July 7, 1999
I learned more about building and maintaining a happy marriage from this book than from all the other marriage books I've read combined, and I've read them all. This book is funny, easy to read, and filled with practical, solid christian advise. Dr. Dobson explains the differences between men and women and teaches basic lessons on communications and co-habitation that every married couple should know. I routinely give this book as gifts to newlywed and engaged couples. I've bought myself several copies because I keep giving them away to friends who have troubled marriages. I pray that God will bless your marriage as you read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who has the agenda?, March 24, 2003
By A Customer
This is a GREAT book for engaged couples. Some of those that have written negative reviews (primarily, of Dr. Dobson himself) are the ones with the agenda. I wonder if they've even read this book. I just read this book and, as a Christian, I find it to be an easy-read and touches on major elements that couples must address... BEFORE THE BIG DAY. Dr. Dobson brings a good deal of experience, knowledge, and spirituality into this piece. I wish the book kept going. That is my only complaint. RECOMMENDED! I recommend it to ALL couples, but especially to Christians. If you're not a Christian, I think you will find value in this but please EXPECT Christian principles to be present.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for those thinking of marriage, Christian or otherwise, January 11, 2002
By
Matthew Gunia (Justice, Illinois) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This is a short, easy to read book, intended to give some advice to young couples contemplating marriage. This slow reader began and finished the book within a couple hours, but the length of time reading the book does not reflect how useful the book is. Some of Dobson's main points are: keep Christ as the center of your relationship (Dobson being an evengelical Christian, writing to others who strongly value Christ); make sure you see eye-to-eye on the big things and be prepared to get into big fights about little things; men and women think differently and it would benefit you greatly to learn the way the other sex thinks. Dobson writes in a fluid style and liberally sprinkles in anecdotes, research, and selections from others' works to make his points. In doing this, he makes his main points stand out and makes his book a fun, lighthearted one written about a subject that is anything but light. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Time doesn't change God's design..., February 26, 2004
By
After reading other reviews of this book I feel compelled to add my two cents. Some say this book presents women in a cowardly and foolish light and that the principals contained in it are outdated; that Dr. Dobson needs to enter the 21st century. However, time doesn't change God's design and plan for males and females. He did, in fact, make us different and no liberal social agenda can change that. What Dobson has to say IS still relevant today and IS valuable to both Christians and non-Christians that are considering marriage. I would highly recommend it as reading prior to the big day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Boost for the Start of Your Marriage, October 19, 2004
This review is from: Love for a Lifetime (Hardcover)
I have used this title by James Dobson numerous times as a premarital recommendation for young couples looking to get a good start on their marriage. Dr. Dobson does a great job of covering all the bases for a solid Christian marriage. It is readable, believable and attractively presented by the publisher. It is the type of book a young couple serious about their marriage can have as a keepsake and reference book as they progress in their early years of marriage. 5 stars in my book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable Family Resource - Bravo Dr. Dobson!, March 14, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Love for a Lifetime: Building a Marriage That Will Go the Distance (Hardcover)
A MUST-HAVE BOOK for parents attempting to instill Christian moral values in their dating (and pre-dating) teens. Makes a great gift - I gave it to my 15 year old last Christmas.

It's also a valuable resource for those who have failed at relationships in the past, it was a real eye-opener for me.

Dr. Dobson writes this book in such a loving and light manner that I felt like my Dad was talking to me and I just wanted to hug him as I finished each chapter.

Thanks Dr. Dobson for another great book

5.0 out of 5 stars Love should be for a Lifetime, January 22, 1999
By A Customer
I am familiar with Dr. Dobson and have a chance to hear him on Focus on the Family each evening on my local radio station. His book, Love for a Lifetime, is a wonderful read and clearly highlights aspects that a pre-marriage couple, newly married couple or any couple needing to direct their focus on the foundation of their relationship. I plan on using his book as wedding gifts for friends that are planning on taking a leap of faith as husbands and wives. Thank you Dr. Dobson for sage and practical advise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Required Reading, August 12, 1998
By
This book is one of the best books on pre marriage building. It starts at the dating process but does not end at the altar. It tells you what you can do to KEEP your marriage going. This should be required reading for any newleyweds or a young couple contemplating marriage. All material is based on our Lord Jesus Christ.

4.0 out of 5 stars good gift, February 27, 2011
By
My husband and I researched a lot of marriage/love books to read together while dating/engaged. This is one we went through and really liked. It's not as in-depth as some other ones, but provides good discussion starters. This book is designed in a very nice format for gift-giving.
