Cave Catt Sammy Magic,
By
This review is from: Love Me Like Crazy (Audio CD)
When Cave Catt Sammy first appeared on the scene, they were a raw, uninhibited rockabilly band with four young guys who knew how to slick their hair back real pretty. But in the years that ensued, the band has truly come of age. Their third album, Love Me Like Crazy (Rubric Records), introduces the listener to a more polished sound. In addition to some excellent hooks influenced by Big Sandy's Fly-Rite Boys, the killer opening track, "Gonna Rock and Roll," affirms the presence of Bill Haley's ghost. They still know how to slick their hair back real pretty, too.The band has been playing together since high school, and the instrumentation is solid. The majority of the album's 14 tracks are originals, and although their sound is not especially inventive, it is certainly pleasing in its energy. Cave Catt Sammy evokes an idea more than they emulate it. The tracks "Doggone, She's Gone" and "Love Me Like Crazy" sound like they could have been on a 45 bought at a small record shop in 1958. There's a timeless style at work here. Frontman Beau "Sammy" Sample is also the upright bassist, which creates a deep acoustic richness behind a pleasing voice. The vocals are best showcased on the songs "Raining Honey" and "Second Hand Lover." But the band works as a team, and all four members are obviously all fans of the music that came out of Sun studios in the 1950s. The songs are crisp, and one assumes the Brill Cream is, too.

I have been fortunate to be there when these guys were just starting out several years ago and now it's hard to believe that their third cd is out. "Love me like crazy" was produced in california with the some of Big Sandy's Fly-Rite Boys behind the knobs and they definitley do not disappoint. The songs are more polished than the previous efforts but with the same raw energy that we all expect in a Cave Catt Sammy recording. If you are reading this and never have heard of these guys. Stop, right now and order this disc. Then e-mail me with want you think. I will guarantee you that Cave Catt Sammy can hold their own with any Rockabilly band in the land, and this latest disc reaffirms just that. ...

Cave Catt Sammy has been one of the greatest powers in current rockabilly for a few years. Anyone who has seen them live knows what I mean. With this release, they really bring it together. Beau has written his best lyrics and the music has some great hooks. The style moves around from song to song. They just keep getting better.

This is one of the best rock'n'roll albums I've ever heard (and I've heard quite a few). Hats off to singer/bass player/songwriter Beau "Sammy" Sample for the fantastic music. These guys might seem (very) young on the cover, but they play amazing, authentic rock'n'roll that would make any of the great rockers of the 50s proud. Buy this album - you won't be disappointed.
