Review

Loved hearing a different side of history
By working mom on August 26, 2013
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I learned a lot about that time in history, but I especially enjoyed learning what it was like in the households at that time.
Wonderful Read!
By Mrs. Joel on June 3, 2013
Mrs. Robson has written a wonderful book about one of the most fascinating couples in American history...The love between John and Abigail endured so much yet remained strong until the very end. I was sad to reach the end of the book. Well done, Mrs. Robson.

From the Author

From the first time I read Johnny Tremain and the young adult novels set in the Revolutionary War, I was hooked by those people and that time. What they sacrificed, what they suffered, what and who they loved. Abigail Adams was a particular favorite -- her modern belief in the strength, intellect and capability of women (without giving up her femininity), spoke volumes to me about the possibilities in life. Then, when I married a mariner, who left me at home for weeks, sometimes months at a stretch to raise our children and cope on my own, I felt as though Abigail could show me how to do it.

In researching the book (done through the 4-volume Belknap Press editions of Abigail and John's letters, among other sources) I got to know her and John in all their flawed (like me) glory, and admired them even more. We don't have to be perfect to be loved. We don't have to be perfect to be good. It helped me loads in my own life. Maybe it will in yours.

More About the Author

Nancy Taylor Robson grew up sailing and building boats with her father, married a tugboat captain, (who she's still happily married to) and embarked on a life of adventure, challenge and fun. Her first book, Woman in the Wheelhouse, told the sometimes harrowing story of working on an old coastal tugboat as cook/deckhand. She earned a tug operator's license and worked in Mexico in the Campeche oil fields on a supply boat.

Her second, Course of the Waterman, the coming of age novel of a young Eastern Shore waterman, won the Fred Bonnie award in 2004. Her third book, second novel, A Love Like No Other: Abigail and John Adams, A Modern Love Story, takes readers into the lives of the new nation's strong-willed second First Lady and her stubborn, often-absent and adored husband, John, our second US President. Robson wrote the book because she had spent big chunks of time raising children alone while her husband was at sea.

A freelance writer for many years, Robson has published personal essays, features, maritime reporting and analysis, travel, garden and more for such places as The Washington Post, Yachting, House Beautiful, The Baltimore Sun, the Christian Science Monitor, Southern Living, Sailing, and more. She is also a University of Maryland Master Gardener who grows and cans the family's fruits and vegetables. She writes, sails, races sailboats (occasionally), walks the German Shepherd dogs, and cooks for friends and family.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I learned a lot about that time in history, but I especially enjoyed learning what it was like in the households at that time. What women and children's lives were like day to day and how they survived illness and other challenges. Very interesting and enjoyable.

Mrs. Robson has written a wonderful book about one of the most fascinating, yet often overlooked, couples in American history. She has truly captured the spirit of the time of which she writes, taking the reader into the life of Abigail Adams and allowing them to understand what life was like for her as she sacrificed so much, as did her husband and family, for the good of a growing nation. The love between John and Abigail endured so much yet remained strong until the very end. I was sad to reach the end of the book. Well done, Mrs. Robson.
