Always a pleasure to read anything by Antonia Fraser!

About three-fourths of the way through, I found myself skimming which is never a good thing, and although I finished it, I will probably not read it again.

He comes acros as a very powerful individual, yet, it appears that he did need them, their sensuality, beauty, and yes, their faith.

I find Antonia Fraser's look at the mistresses and wives of Louis XIV most fascinating and interesting. However I am put off by the sloppiness of proof-reading in the Kindle edition. The most egregious example is the confusion in "Duc" and "due." Someone irresponsibly seems to have used the spell check to mindlessly replace all "due to" to "Duc to." There must be well over 50 times that this happens in the text. Why can't Antonia Fraser or her literary agent provide a corrected version to Amazon for sale?

Even though this account is a bit biased towards the monarch, Frasier has done a fantastic job at layering interesting details about Louis XIV. This is a must read for anyone interseted in pre-revolutionary France.

This is a very good read about the person and the ladies that shared their love, life and his fortune. He comes acros as a very powerful individual, yet, it appears that he did need them, their sensuality, beauty, and yes, their faith. Somehow, I don't come out angry at him for all the pain inflicted on most of them, they were all victims of the times and the expectations placed on him. I would like a book on the affair of Luis XI4 and his Louise, it is my believe that she was the one woman that really loved him the most and consequently, sufferer the most because of it.

This is a wonderfully-detailed biography of Louis XIV and every important woman in his life, from his mother to the wife of his grandson. It offers detailed portraits of each of Louis' mistresses, but it also covers his wives, his females friends, his nieces, every woman who was part of his orbit at Versailles, as well as stories about the court and the palace itself. I can't recommend this book too highly; it is fascinating.

I have come to expect so much from Antonia Fraser's books and had looked forward to this particular tome with a lot of anticipation. Unfortunately I was disappointed with the content, which seemed to give neither very interesting information nor give any real idea of the court of one of the most powerful absolute monarchs in history. About three-fourths of the way through, I found myself skimming which is never a good thing, and although I finished it, I will probably not read it again.
