Editorial Reviews

If one thing served as Lucy Ricardo's holy grail, it was her goal to be in show business. As the years on the long-running series demonstrated, she didn't care whether it was comedy or drama, dancing or singing, respectable or questionable. She just wanted to be a part of celebrity. Eventually, she got her wish. I Love Lucy may even have invented the importance and promotion of the guest star and those celebrities' effect on ratings. In her TV days, Lucy (Lucille Ball) met everyone from Bob Hope to John Wayne, from William Holden to Harpo Marx. In "L.A. at Last," Lucy, her husband Ricky (Desi Arnaz), and their friends Fred and Ethel Mertz (William Frawley and Vivian Vance) have finally reached Los Angeles after a long drive (and lots of adventure) from New York. She gets her dearest desire after she heads out to the legendary Brown Derby and sees Eve Arden and William Holden, who play themselves. Someone gets a pie in the face, and it's hysterically funny, despite how old that joke is. Holden's wife, along with the spouses of Dean Martin, Gordon MacRae, Richard Carlson, Van Heflin, and Forrest Tucker, are featured in "The Fashion Show," as is couturier Don Loper. Lucy has an opportunity to join the celebrity wives in a fashion show and she takes it, but she wants a slight tan first. Lucy's resulting lobster skin--and Ball's impeccable timing--are simply the funniest. --N.F. Mendoza

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER SIDE-SPLITTING EPISODE FROM LUCYBALL AND CO., December 3, 1999
This review is from: I Love Lucy: L.A. At Last & Fashion Show [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"L.A.at Last" is a prime Lucy venture. This is the famous episode in which she sees William Holden at the Brown Derby. Later that day, Ricky brings Holden along to meet Lucy(she was reponsible for getting pie all over Holden at the famed restaurant earlier that day),Lucy attempts to disguise herself via a putty nose, glasses and a scarf over her flaming red hair.Legend say that the scene where Lucy douses her nose in her coffee cup was entirely her own doing (her nose was on fire)! The scene where Ethel cuts Lucy's spaghetti with her manicure scissors is a gem. "The Fashion Show" is very funny as well with amazingly realistic "sunburn make-up" applied to the star.Sheila MacRae appears as herself as do the wives of Van Heflin,Dean Martin and Forrest Tucker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Lucille Ball, December 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: I Love Lucy: L.A. At Last & Fashion Show [VHS] (VHS Tape)
In the show with William Holden, it is classic "Lucy" mishaps. She was never more brilliant with her comedy. It is a must for all to see even if you are not a Lucy fan, see it and you will become one
