5.0 out of 5 stars All Good
I like this CD because the songs reveal some of the best qualities of Alexander O' Neal's voice. He sings slow, fast, moans, and groans while painting the picture of a guy persuading a girl to see things his way. My favorite up-tempo song is "If U Let It." It's New Jack Swing, and it's still good listening. I also like "In The Middle," especially because of the...

3.0 out of 5 stars AN OKAY ALEXANDER O'NEAL CD , BUT IT'S JUST NOT PERFECT!
first off, i'm a huge o'neal fan. the man can sing! but this album is missing jimmy jam and terry lewis' amazing song-writing skills and super-tight smooth production! alex, by himself, is like a plate of lip-smacking bbq ribs. yet, if you add jimmy jam and terry lewis to alex's husky voice, it's like a tasty soulfood buffett for 5 million and counting...

I also like "In The Middle," especially because of the lyrics, not to mention Alex's singing. Regarding the last six songs on this disc, Alex's voice married with the poignant lyrics will make a person take stock of his or her romantic relationship. Those final songs are mostly slow, and they tend to evoke gratitude for who and what you've got at home. Here you have all songs very well-written; and Alexander O' Neal ensures they are well-sung.

still, this album is a must-have just to hear the songs LOVE MAKES NO SENSE, IF YOU LET IT, AFRODESIA, and IN THE MIDDLE! so, get this album just to add onto your personal cd/mp3 collection of alex's body of impressive work!

As a fan of Alexander O'neal I'm so glad to have found this cd on Amazon, I bought it for the song In The Middle, it's a great up tempo dance song, the rest of the cd is nice also, very smoothe soulful voice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Certainly not his greatest but still good, February 14, 2010
This review is from: Love Makes No Sense (Audio CD)
Already having proven himself adept at both sensuous soul ballads and gritty dance-funk with his brilliant self-titled and "Hearsay" albums from the 80s (and his decent if not outstanding effort from `91), this 1993 album finds Alex in a bit of a different place, and while the results aren't quite as cohesive as previous efforts, this album still has more positives than negatives. There is clearly more of a new-jack swing sound on this album, but it's still some good new-jack swing that sounds well-produced and not forced, and there's one decent ballad in "Lady." The slightly rock-tinged "All That Matters" has a breezy, uplifting feel to it, and, like many times before, he and his star duet partner Cherrelle team up once again, this time to make a pleasing if not groundbreaking cover of the classic Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell masterpiece "Your Precious Love." Unfortunately, one thing that does make the album suffer just a bit is the noticeable loss of some of the power and grit that his voice had just a few years back (which may or may not be due to some addictions he's battled over the years). In any case, this might have been a bit of a step down for Alex, but it's hardly a descent into hell, and most Alex fans should find it mostly satisfying.

2.0 out of 5 stars Alex in a confused place..., April 17, 2007
This review is from: Love Makes No Sense (Audio CD)
What a change a decade makes. On one hand you have Jam and Lewis, tied up with Janet, allow a grab bag of Teddy Riley wannabes to bury O'Neal's husky voice in a soup of hip-hop beats and samples. Its easy to see why why the title track was released first; its the only song where he sounds comfortable, relaxed, and unforced. The rest of the disc suffers from a musical conflict of interest. To put it another way: New Jack Swing and Southern Soul don't really belong on the same record. It just messes up the flow. 'All that Matters' and 'Since I've been loving you' both sound like they belong on a Latimore record, while 'Aphrodisia' is a thinly veiled take on Marvin Gaye that falls flat on its face. How 'Your Precious Love' made the album is anyone's guess, just a terrible recording. Alex must've been spending time in his hometown of Natchez, MS when he recorded this...because it sounds like Open Mic night at Johnny's Rib Shack! Funny thing is that I actually like Southern Soul as long as its not cross-pollinated with other styles of music, which is exactly what the producers did on this record. Big mistake. Still, this disc isn't as bad as Michael Jackson's 'Blood on the Dance Floor' record.
