PreS-Gr. 3. The silence of a peaceful forest, with blue and green trees suggestive of gumdrops and a landscape surrounded by swirls of blue hills, is broken by an insistent cry. "Love me! Love me!" calls a strange-looking bird with a hot pink beak, a dotted pink dress, and a tail that resembles a heart-shaped oven mitt. The needy, narcissistic bird interrupts the sleep of Shut-Eye the owl, who gives the Love-Me bird advice: act glamorous; act helpless; play hard to get; feather a fancy nest. Of course, the advice fails in fine comic fashion, leading the owl to suggest that the Love-Me bird change her tune to "Love you!" Wouldn't you know it; true love comes flying in on the next pink pair of wings. The cheery pastel illustrations, which fill with flowers as the pages are turned, perfectly match this whimsical tale with wisdom at its heart. Connie Fletcher

So she sings her "Love me!" song all day, keeping poor Shut-Eye the owl awake. Yet no other bird comes... until the owl tells her a profound truth about love, and teaches her a new song: "Love you!" For a little bird can be both a "Love me!" and "Love you!" bird at the same time. I don't understand why this book is out of print - it is just fantastic. I read it to my daughter last night and the message is just ringing in my ears all day today. If you want love, you need to give love. What a great message for kids and everyone else!
