4.0 out of 5 stars As far as Flinx adventures go, this one is right on target.
For Love Of Mother-Not is Flinx's first adventure (chronologically in Flinx's life). Foster goes back in time to Flinx's adoption by Mother Mastiff, his discovery of Pip, the explaination for the source of Flinx's Talent (a shadowy group of scientists monkeying around with human genes to create a "super-human"). As far as Flinx adventures go, this one is right...

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs an editor
This is an ok story, worth a read. However, it was full of spelling and grammatical errors. So much so that even I started noticing (someone who barely passed language classes in college after a second attempt). The author gives away to much of the mysteries before it is relevant in the story to reveal them. This made it hard at times to continue reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another entry in my nostagia world book tour, August 17, 2003
By
This review is from: For Love of Mother-Not (Unbound)
I re-owned this book as a consequence of having to clean all my books out of my father's house and found myself again in possession of all the books I had hoarded as a pre-teen and teenager. I remembered liking this series a great deal and decided to see how it stood the test of time.

Surprisingly well, is the answer. Although _The Tar-Aiym Krang_ remains my favorite in the series, FLOMN is a nice portrait of the hero as a young boy. Particularly well-done is the way that he bonds with Pip and Mother Mastiff. More character than adventure, but that is not such a bad thing.

I will be holding on to this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this universe, April 12, 2003
This review is from: For Love of Mother-Not (Unbound)
I just love about 95% of books by this author. I finally decided to see if I could find the first book in probably his most popular series.

Mother Mastif didn't know what stopped her on the way to her shop and drew her to a slave auction. Quite without meaning to she buys a boy named Flix who has some..rather interesting abilities. Then things get really interesting as the book goes on.

My impression what I love most about this series, (other then the action and humor that drip from every page) are the names of the charecters.

With names like Mother Mastif
Flix
Pip
My personal favorite an ex-solider named Makes Peace you know that you are in for a treat.

I know that this sounds quiche but this not typical science fiction. I don't give just any old science fiction a 5 star review it has to be really really good. But to Quote Lavar Buurton "Don't just take my word for it". Go out and get yourself a copy of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very glad to see this book re-released, May 15, 2007
This is the first in the Pip series and in my opinion, the best. I'm very glad it's been re-released for another generation.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1st Adventure of Flinx and Pip, June 22, 2011
"For Love of Mother-Not" is the 1st adventure of Pip and Flinx in the Humanx universe. Alan Dean Foster goes back in time to tell the story of how Mother Mastiff and Flinx met, and also how Flinx first encounters his mini-dragon, Pip. We also get to see the emergence of Flinx's "Talent". The book takes place on Moth, the homeworld of Flinx and Mother Mastiff. Most of the story is about Flinx and Pip chasing down some shadowy characters who have kidnapped Mother Mastiff. We get to visualize some different areas of Moth, and some of the local wildlife. The book was an enjoyable and easy read. Onto the next adventure of Pip and Flinx.

5.0 out of 5 stars First and Best, June 14, 2005
Love this book, best in the series. The other books vary from very good (Mid-Flinx, The Tar-Aiym Krang) to not-so-great (Reunion-what was he thinking?) but this is the only one I keep coming back to. Delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow start and yet again no chapter demarcation, December 26, 2011

This book was a fine start, or continuation depending on if you read the books by publication date or chronologically, to the series. It started slow and at first I thought I was glad that I hadn't read this one first because I might not have read the rest of the series, but by the end of the book, that problem was gone. The only problem I had with this book had nothing to do with the story itself. The book had a few typos and what seems like an unusually large amount of extra and misused commas for no reason in many sentences on most pages. My biggest pet peeve with this book is, however, that it has no chapter demarcation. It would be so much nicer if this series had it, but as of yet, none of the books have had it. Thankfully, now the rest of the books in the series don't differ so that the chronological and publication orders are the same. I can't wait to read Flinx in Flux.

4.0 out of 5 stars The first of many..., June 11, 2011

Stumbling across this title, I had no expectations. What I found was a very well written story with interesting characters. So interesting that I looked up the chronological sequence for this series and bought the next in line. I highly recommend this to anyone that enjoys well written science fiction stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Old School SciFi, July 7, 2010
By
W. Bentrim (Bucks County, PA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This is the first of the Pip and Flinx stories. Pip is an Alaspinian mini-dragon. Flinx is an orphan with interesting talents. Flinx is the unwitting target of both law enforcement and an underground outlaw group. Avoiding entrapment by either group is the gist of the story.

I have enjoyed the Pip and Flinx stories over the years and have carefully kept them for my grandson. I was delighted to find this first volume to set the scene for the later books.

Flinx and Pip have a relationship that is beyond the boy and his pet type. They are interdependent, more so than Flinx realizes. The story is the beginning of a coming of age saga. It is classic, old school scifi and I really liked it.

I recommend the book.
