Great Acoustic Blues!,
By Acoustic Blues Fan (Houston, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Love Murder & Mosquitos (Audio CD)
If you like the old style acoustic blues, this is the man. Geremia plays acoustic 6 & 12 string guitar (and if I remember correctly a piano tune or two) along with his blues harp. Most songs are Geremia solo, but he has an occasional sideman joining him. He is an excellent guitarist and has a great voice for the blues! After years of purchasing books and CDs from amazon, I've never had the urge to write a review until hearing this guy. Great stuff!

It's great to hear Paul going strong after so many years. Energy a bit more mellow, but still toe-tapping ("This Mornin' She Was Gone") and topical ("New Bully of the Town").

4.5 Star Album From One Of The Best Blues Players Today,
This review is from: Love Murder & Mosquitos (Audio CD)
Paul Geremia is the greatest Blues fingerpicker alive today. He proves this on his cover of Mississippi John Hurt's "Frankie", and on other wonderful tracks, such as "Tootie Blues", which one needs to hear to believe. "This Morning She Was Gone" is an old, lovely classic by Jim Jackson, which loses its vitality on this album. In other words, Jackson's version is far superior because it simply sounds archaic and tear-jerkingly beautiful in its grandiose simplicity. Is is a song not from the last century, but the 1800s. "Slow Mama Slow" is a well-performed Cryin' Sam Collins classic. Basically, the only weak aspect of Geremia's performing skills is his voice. He does not have a voice for the Blues. In truth, there are very few, if any, white men who can sing the old Country Blues properly. Out of all the black performers alive today, perhaps only Alvin Youngblood Hart, Corey Harris and Samuel James can do this. It is indeed a lost art. However, we shouldn't fault Geremia for this, as his guitar playing is simply dazzling. Willie McTell's "Don't Forget It" is also very well-performed. George Carter's "Rising River Blues" is a song I've never heard performed by anyone but Carter, and while it doesn't match Carter's dream-like atmosphere, it is an excellent performance. I highly recommend this album, despite Geremia's ultra-left-wing political beliefs.

This review is from: Love Murder & Mosquitos (Audio CD)
First off, I actually met and talked Paul Geremia, and know him through my guitar teacher. Plus I saw him recienty in consert. He was really excited about this new album, and played most of the songs that were on it. So I kind of knew what to expect. This album is blues purists and fans alike. I hope this wins best blues album of the year. Paul is probably the best acoustic blues musician alive today. What more can I say, get it

Love, Murder and Right Wing Politics,

This review is from: Love Murder & Mosquitos (Audio CD)
Slide twelve-string blues is just something you have to hear to believe and Paul Geremia aces it. The title cut 'Meet me in the bottom' alone is worth the price of the CD. There's nothing else like it and I would give it six stars but for the "New Bully of the Town' cut which is just a right wing, anti-government pro-Waco wacko track. The music is fine, mind you, but the politics is offensive, to me, at least. But overall, a great CD, and a great addition to any collection of acoustic blues' modern masters.
