Love Nest / All Over the Place

These two recordings are some of the best things the storied group recorded for Columbia. Gene Puerling was at his near best on Love Nest, perhaps spurred on by Clare Fischer's three wonderful vocal arrangements for the group--Yesterdays, This Heart of Mine, Fairyland. The vocal arrangements here are full of lush dense chords, contrary motion, wide intervals,and impecable intonation. This, combined with just great singing---especially the upper register combination of tenors Bob Morse and Clark Burroughs--helped make the group one of a kind. Frank Comstock's orchestral backings compliment things as only he could (with a healthy influence of Robert Farnon).

The second recording, All Over the Place, is the second release with new tenor Don Shelton (Morse moved down to sing baritone). A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square, Gloca Mora, Sand In my Shoes, Bali H'ai, and the gorgeous Autumn in New York lead the pack. Also, check out the vocal gymnastics on Italian street Song, and Fairbanks, Alaska. Orchestral arrangements are by Marty Paich who did a spectacular job on the groups' All That Jazz recording, as well as several notable recordings with Mel torme.

Nothing more can be said about the Hi-Lo's, that hasn't already been said. They are the "Bomb" . Enough said.

This cd brings back many memories. We had several of the HI Lo's vinyl albums, so nice to be able to get it on a cd...

The harmony and voice blend is extroadinary and their ability to begin and end phrases exactly together is mind boggleing. The two albums have very different styles of songs so there will be some you don't like as well as others you love but overall terrific.

This is a recording that I had when it was first released, and since lost. It was a favorite then and Just as I remembered it.
