5.0 out of 5 stars My Love for the Nightingale, January 12, 2012
This review is from: The Love Of The Nightingale (Paperback)
As a performer, I am always looking for material to pass on to other artists. The Love of the Nightingale is always one of the first plays I recommend to anyone. Firstly, because it is beautifully written by Timberlake Wertenbaker. Secondly, because the plot revolves around strong female characters. And thirdly, because it is an ensemble piece.

This play is all about relationships. How time, distance, war, and lies can effect each person and each relationship to where they become unrecognizable to each other and to themselves. Each character, major and minor, is fully developed and can easily be related to. Which is why this is such an outstanding ensemble piece. Every single person gets to explore a different aspect of love, hate, violence, and strength.

It is rare to find a play that doesn't just have strong female characters in it, but one where the plot actually revolves around the women themselves. I highly recommend this to any actor or actress if you are looking for new classical material. It is full of rich, dramatic, relevant, and accessible monologues that are great for auditions.

To any directors/producers who may be reading this, this is the perfect show to do on a tight budget. You don't need the fancy sets, crazy cool effects, or elaborate costuming for this play to strike a chord in audiences hearts today. All you need is a strong group of artists to ride the waves of Wertenbaker's words.
