The Submarines - Fire [Official Music Video]

Biography

“When you write about relationships, you can’t do it halfway,” Blake confesses. “I think you really have to be fearless, and of course it's never easy."

The linear thinker versus the abstract thinker. The studio tinkerer versus the bedroom balladeer. Boy versus girl. You versus me. Us versus the world, set against a backdrop of pretty pictures and crazy ... Read more in Amazon's The Submarines Store

Editorial Reviews

Indie-pop duo The Submarines return with Love Notes/Letter Bombs, their third full-length release on Nettwerk Records. Self-produced with mixing from John OMahony (Metric, Coldplay), Love Notes/Letter Bombs is the follow-up to 2008s critically acclaimed Honeysuckle Weeks. The first single, Birds--reminiscent of Revolver-era Beatles, with lazy, back porch guitar and backwards solosis out today. The track is one of a handful on the album featuring live drums, a new addition to The Submarines recording process, played by Spoons Jim Eno.
Though Love Notes/Letter Bombs is disarmingly easy to listen to, there is an unmistakable theme of conflict throughout. As personal and professional lives intertwine, tensions can run as high as the love, as the lyrics to these 10 songs attest. One suspects The Submarines wouldn't want it any other way.

As good as their first two CD's were, this is even better, and those were fantastic. Melodies that absolutely do not miss, crisp vocals, a nice punchy indie beat and lyrics that really work, if maybe just a tad too lovey, I cannot find a flaw anywhere. Some people just have music built in them, and these two have been killing since they started. By all means check it out.

Track by Track review:

1. Shoelaces - This track has some very well-written lyrics. However, the thumping, distorted bass deter the song. 3/5

2. Fire - Awesome intro. The Synth playing the melody after the intro is annoying as well as the hip-hop style thumps. Thankfully, these sound effects really do not come back into the song. 4/5

3. Ivaloo - The chord progression is great in this song; probably the best The Submarines have ever done. The vocal melodies, instrumental melodies, lyrics, and the bridge are all superb. 5/5

4. The Sun Shines At Night - One of the best songs on the album. The chorus is catchy and the shoegaze effects work well. The verses are very beautiful. 5/5

5. Birds - This is one of the weaker songs on the album. The monotonous beat and the lyrics are not very good. 2/5

6. Tigers - The lyrics and instrumentation are great on this song. 4/5

7. Where You Are - The broken chords in the chorus make up for the annoying synth in the beginning of each verse. 4/5

8. Plans - This is the worst song on the album. There are really no redeeming qualities to this one. The lyrics and chord progression are all uninspired. The fact that it was on Gray's Anatomy doesn't help. 1/5

9. A Satellite, Stars and an Ocean Behind You - This song has the catchiest melodies, and very sad lyrics. It reminds of Jonsi, which is probably why I like it so much. It's the best song on the album 5/5.

10. Anymore - A very sad song. Great verse and chorus. 5/5.

If some of the songs could've just not had some of those dumb, annoying sound effects, the album would've been much better. A 38/50 rounds out to 4 stars.

The songs are just so touching, and the music is very calming to listen to. My personal favorites are "The Sun Shines At Night" and "A Satellite, Stars, and an Ocean Behind You."

I describe these guys as simultaneously happy and relaxing. I can listen to them while doing pretty much anything and in any mood.

This band has quickly become one of my favorites. I was first introduced to their music through the movie Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Once I heard them it was gameover. This is actually the first CD of theirs that I bought and I love every-single-track on it. Top to bottom, one of the best CD's I own, and I will always be a fan of theirs because of it.
