About the Author
Independent author William Oak, who now lives in Cypress, Texas, is not your typical Âsensitive guy. He grew up in Wisconsin, served as a rough merchant marine on the Great Lakes, and now works in the highly competitive, male dominated business of the oil trade. HeÂs just like so many of us who grew up not really connecting with our parents, and those we love, not expressing feelings, not talking about whatÂs important in life.
But all of that changed the day his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Bill realized he might lose his mother, yet he really didnÂt know her. He spent each night over the next several months sitting with her, talking, and sharing when she came home from her job as a nurse late at night. Each evening he was there. And by the time she did succumb to the disease, he not only knew who his mother was, but realized that in those intimate exchanges, he had learned the most important lessons of his life: The lessons of love.
The result of that education is the new book, ÂFor Love or NothingÂ, an eight-year long project that he hopes will interest a wide range of audiences, from teenagers, to newlyweds, to those who have been married for years.
ÂI learned that the significance of a person's life is measured by the depth of his love for others, says Mr. Oak. ÂIf we are to find lasting love, we must go beyond the simple acknowledgement that love makes us feel good, and take concrete steps to utilize our full capacity to love. And, the lessons woven throughout the folktales and allegories of this book can help.
ÂFor Love or Nothing is freelance author OakÂs first book. Oak now lives outside of Houston with his wife of 20 years, Diane, their daughter Addison and two sons, Nicholas and Cary.
