4.0 out of 5 stars The trimmings make this great! July 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Labor Day is one of those days where it can be too hot to cook, and too easy to fire up the grill and cook the same thing as last weekend, and the weekend before that. Blah. That's not the way to celebrate a wonderful summer.

Well, trust Maggie to come to the rescue! In this cookbook, her main dishes are classics (but worth celebrating) and they'll get you out of the burgers-and-dogs rut. Most of these recipes are spicy but not too hot. I'm pretty sure you could leave the peppers out of most of the main dish recipes, if you're not a fan of barbecued meals with extra sizzle. Maggie seems to specialize in down-home recipes that can be adapted to any menu.

But, for me, the trimmings really make this book a worthwhile purchase. I'm delighted to finally have a pineapple salsa recipe that doesn't just substitute pineapples for peppers (or add pineapple to the peppers). Maggie's recipe uses ingredients that will enhance the pineapple flavor without making it too sweet, and nicely accent whatever main dish you add it to. (In this case, Maggie shares a good, simple pork chop recipe.)

The iced brownies recipe features an ingredient that hadn't crossed my mind, to keep the brownies moist and "just right" (as Goldilocks would say) for the icing. If, like me, you're accustomed to cake brownies that don't really work with icing, you (and your kids) will be very pleased with Maggie's recipe.

Likewise, Maggie's grilled garlic bread recipe brings some extra flavoring that hadn't occurred to me. With a beef dish -- like her pot roast recipe (cooked on the grill) -- it sounds like the perfect accent, far better than the Texas toast garlic bread I usually serve with grilled beef.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Recipes for Labor Day and Any Day July 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Love of Cooking: Labor Day is another fabulous cookbook by Maggie Brooks. This cookbook contains unique appetizers and drinks, main dishes and desserts. I really like that Maggie takes the time to mark those recipes that are her favorites because I have come to discover that they are my favorites too!

I love how easy it is to navigate the Love of Cooking cookbooks. The recipes are clearly written and contain tips to make it even easier to make the delicious dishes. What I love about this cookbook especially is that it has such unique recipes. Normally for my Labor Day parties I serve the same fare that I do for Memorial Day and the 4th of July. The recipes in this book, such as Broccoli Corn Bake, Grilled Pork Chops with Pineapple Salsa, and Butterscotch Coconut Bars, gives me fresh ideas for my upcoming party.

I highly recommend Love of Cooking: Labor Day!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for Labor Day cooking July 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Quite often, meals for Labor Day weekend are the same, year after year. This cookbook gives easy, tasty ideas for Labor Day meals. Tired of the same old sandwiches? Why not try a Ham Stuffed Baguette or Kickin' Pimento Cheese Sandwiches? How about Party Sticks to add a little variety? For beverages, there is a Classic Sherbet Punch, and for the grownups, a Peach and Cherry Sangria. Why have a plain potato salad when you can have a Mashed Potato Salad? Need to set it and forget it? Try the Crock Pot Chili. And, for dessert, the Grasshopper Pie. Lots of other great meal ideas, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner by Maggie Brooks July 31, 2012
By JP
Format:Kindle Edition
I've read some of her other books and always enjoyed them. She does those kinds of cookbooks I just keep referring back to over and over. Luckily, they are an easy read.

These great Labor Day recipes are no exception. Nicely done, well written with easy to follow recipes. I liked the way she broke the recipes down to appetizers, main dishes, sides and desserts. Super easy to find what you're looknig for. And there are plenty of recipes for everyone's tastse, kids and adults alike. We'll be making these long after Labor Day has come and gone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love It - Labor Day or Any Day! July 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Looking for that perfect party menu? Look no further - Labor Day or any other day. Maggie Brooks hits another home run with her down home recipes and easy style. I always struggle with trying something new - especially for a holiday - and end up making the same ole boring menu. I can tell you that Maggie's dishes will be gracing our table this Labor Day - especially the Baked Pineapple with Rum and the Mashed Potato Salad. My husband will be very happy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner! July 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I follow all the cookbooks by "Love of Cooking" and this new addition is another 5-star addition to my library of Kindle cookbooks. I'm liking this holiday series as it gives me something new to look forward to planning instead of the usual patio fare. As with her other books, all the fixins are here from the drinks to the desserts. Since I LOVE brats on the bbq, I'll be serving the "Drunken Brats!"

I was introduced to Maggie's style of book by a good friend of mine who had bought her other book "Love Of Cooking: 4th of July. I tend to agree with Maggie in her introduction, that eating is a big part of any celebration.

After reading through the book, I am going definitely going to try the Chicken Spaghetti which appears to be one of the author's favorites and I can understand why. Also among the starters "Classic Sherbet Punch" plus "Homemade Peach Ice Cream" will be among my list of favorites also. I do love sweets and was fascinated on how the home made ice cream was made.

It was nice to read that all the recipes have been tested in their homes. Indeed one of her friends has a batch of "Whiskey Slush" frozen in her home, so it's always available, because it's such a favourite with her family.

I found the recipes easily laid out, not complicated and even I would attempt a lot of them. I really recommend this book, because it's from someone who clearly loves cooking.
