5.0 out of 5 stars Brassy and sassy!
A wonderful read! Man does it cook! Wonderful characters jump off the page at you, and I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Gail can cook up a batch of love potions for me any time, and Jo Jo the male hair stylist practically steals the show!
But Adam and Nicole are made for each other! An excellent thread of mystery and suspense running though the book...

What do four women and "Jo-Jo", an ex-cop, and the Love Goddess all have in common? Love Potions by Leslie Esdaile.

Four women (Nikki, Victoria, Delores, Gail) all friends, and all finding themselves in the need for cash, decide to throw a few psychic-reading parties. For authenticity they develop a love potion elixir to sell to the clientele. Nicole Gordon is the resident "psychic" and Adam Bastille, an ex-cop private eye, comes in for a reading from Nicole trying to find out information on a case. He ends up walking out with a special elixir that has him falling head over heels for Nicole. Fortunately for Adam, Nicole didn't need the elixir for her to fall in love with him.

This book is filled with so many different things (even a bit of mystery) that the romance of the main characters, Nicole and Adam, can and did get lost in the shuffle. However, the parties, "Jo-Jo", and the effects of the elixir made for funny situations and plenty of romance for the others. It is necessary that I mention one particular intimate scene between Nicole and Adam that is out of this world. (I read that scene twice) Despite some of the choppiness in the romance storyline, this book would be a good read on a lazy afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best!!!, April 8, 2002
This review is from: Love Potions (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
I read this book, and frankly I really liked the fact that these ladies took their situations and made a better future for each one of them. And I wouldn't mind one of those potions for when the time was right. Here you have a couple of ladies sitting around bemoaning their fates when a sisterfriend of theirs suggested pooling their gifts together and go into a psychic/love potion selling business and boy do it kick off. As soon as they start it, each one of the ladies lose their jobs and they get back together to rethink their strategies. A lot of unusual and funny stuff happens in love potions, but you will be entertained and empowered to see these sisters changing their own destinies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!!!, May 14, 2002

I did not like this book! It was too slow and unrealistic. It took me three weeks to finish this book because I kept putting it down. I think the storyline could have been developed more. I was very, very disappointed!!!

Love Potions is a vibrant and refreshing story by Leslie Esdaile. The energy jumps off the page. Nicole Gordon or Nikki to her friends is a divorced Mom living in Philadelphia. She has surrounded herself with loving friends and this helps her cope with her loneliness and the fact that her ex-husband left her with a huge amount of debt.

The story begins with a well-crafted conversation among four friends-Delores, Gail, Victoria, and Nikki. They reminisce about the previous day-Valentine's Day and the lack of male companionship. Victoria who is the oldest out of the friends suggests that the women start doing things for themselves, such as pampering, taking trips, etc. The rest of the ladies insist that they would, if they had the extra money.

Victoria becomes outraged that the women are not taking charge of their financial situations. The ladies brainstorm and come up with an idea to earn extra money.

They use Victoria's beauty shop for the location of their part-time gig. They decide to host psychic-reading parties by special invitation only. The parties are a success and word spreads all over town about Nikki, "The Love Goddess," and her love potion. The love potion is some powerful stuff; it is a little love mixed with a secret ingredient and it has the whole town wanting a sample.

Adam Bastille is from New Orleans, Louisiana and has started a private investigating firm in the area. He meets Nikki when he's investigating a crime that was committed against his cousin. Although his mother and friends are believers of "magic," he does not and is very skeptical before meeting "The Love Goddess."

Nikki and Adam are immediately attracted to one another and Adam is drawn into her spell. He also experiments with taking the "Love Potion" and it only heightens his feelings towards the mysterious woman. Neither one is aware that something from their past ties them together. With the help of her friends, Nikki decides to give Adam a try and they begin a relationship that is very fulfilling and stimulating both spiritually and physically.

Although Nikki and Adam are the main characters, the other characters play a major role in the story development. The girlfriend scenes are believable and it confirms how important it is to have friends that support you through good times and bad. The book is full of energy and the excitement is felt throughout the book. It is definitely a page-turner.

Love Potions is a delight to read.

Take four best friends with vivid imaginations, and trying to make ends meet for themselves and their families and you get vegetable juice love potions and psychic readings. However, Nikki (Nicole) Gordon and her friends Veronica, Delores and Gail get more involved in everyone's business and love life than they ever planned. They are surprised to find that the love potions seem to actually work and Nikki finds that she does indeed have a gift. Ex-police officer Adam Basitlle is not so sure about what is really going on at these readings, all he knows is that the lines are awfully long outside the beauty shop every week. He is determined to find out why. When he meets Nikki, his investigation takes a detour as he finds himself captivated by her beauty and her true knack of seeing things before they happen. Each of the ladies lives take a turn for the better but not before several harrowing experiences which are the direct result of their psychic-reading venture.

Author Leslie Esdaile managed to combine humor, sensuality and mystery in LOVE POTIONS. She has written a colorful romantic novel about girlfriend bonds, extended family, love and never giving up hope.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sisterhood, September 3, 2003
This review is from: Love Potions (Arabesque) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a very comical read about four friends who happen to be in a money bind. So they come up with this idea to make love potions and sell them. This starts a very funny ride about different couples who their significant other takes the potion. This was worth the money.
