5.0 out of 5 stars We gaijin are doing this whole music thing all wrong, February 21, 2002

Simply put: Love Psychedelico is friggin' awesome. Not one of their songs from either of their full-length albums is unlistenable. They have an uncanny ability to write extremely catchy tunes, mixed with Japanese and English lyrics for an overall near perfect sound. Even if you don't speak Japanese, you'll find yourself humming along to each of these songs after two rotations. Their sophomore effort, Love Psychedelic Orchestra, one-upped their previous, The Greatest Hits, with 12 tracks of simply great songs. Buy this album. It's worht every extra penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Surprise in Years, February 27, 2002
This review is from: Love Psychedelico (Audio CD)
I found this album at HMV in Singapore and bought it based only on its position on the Japanese chart. I haven't been this pleased since Shonen Knife came out with Rock Animals. Every song on the album is solid and at least three would be legitimate hits in the U.S. if American radio would ever consider Japanese music. It's hard to identify the genre and perhaps that is why this album stands out so much, i.e. it is not immediately "Alternative" or "Japanese Pop". There are nuances of Beatles and Bob Dylan but I must say that Love Psychedelico's style is rather original in my experience. And for those concerned about the language barrier, about 90% of the album is in English.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock and roll!, September 11, 2002
This review is from: Love Psychedelico (Audio CD)
Love Psychedelico strikes again.

This time, their 70's rock style hits harder and bends the spectrum even more. While "Greatest Hits" (not to mention their endless singles with B-sides) sounded like an excellent take of Sheryl Crow or Led Zeppelin, "Psychedelic Orchestra" ventures into other territories of rock...

There's ballads, gut-wrenching acoustic bits, buzzed-out potsmoker jams, and even a post-punk track on here. The opening track "Standing Bird" uses bluesy guitar pedals and vocoders, giving a jagged edge to open the album. The next track, "Free World" seems to follow the manual "How To Play Rock and Roll" with the guitars and vocals right behind the beat, rather than with it. "I Will Be With You" is a perfect chick-rock track, uses impressive instrumentwork and a catchy chorus. "You Ate It" consists of what sounds like a drunken rambling and has superb guitar work and vocals. The most serendipitous track is "O", where Love Psychedelico takes a stab at a punk-rock/alternative theme, and does a really surprising job at it...however, they should just stick to their ganja rock.

Whatever. Great Japanese rock to be had here, and most of the songs are English in bulk, so you won't have a hard time to understand it. Buy it!
