Book Description

June 30, 2003 2 and up
Pugs are funny, affectionate, and endearingly odd, and to love one is to be under its spell. Pug owners are passionate, and have even been known to express their devotion in love songs and poetry-and Woodleigh Marx Hubbard is no exception! She is, in her own words, "besotted" with her pug, Oliver Wink.

Perfect for pug aficionados and dog lovers everywhere, her whimsical tribute to pugs captures their exuberance, as her energetic illustrations celebrate and applaud the many colorful sides of this truly unique little dog.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Using traditional rhymes, the author pays homage to a pug by way of word substitution. For instance, "Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard/to get her poor Pug a bone," and "How much pie could a Pug put away/If a Pug could put away pie?" Six stanzas are illustrated in full-color pencil and gouache, each on a different spread. These are separated by labeled pictures of Pug set against a white background and thematically connected to the previous rhyme; for example, Mother Hubbard's calamity is followed by depictions of "Grumpy Pug" and "Hangdog Pug." The pup shown is the same throughout and the figure of a woman appears several times, so there is some continuity to the book. The art is energized with swirls, diagonals, and cross-hatching, and with the dramatic use of color. As an indulgent, creative endeavor, this book shines, but the sum of its parts is too sophisticated for preschoolers, and, with the exception of dog lovers, there's no real hook to draw readers in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very adorable book for the pug lover!, December 3, 2003
By
This review is from: For the Love Of A Pug (Hardcover)
I just got this book and I couldn't wait to read it. It is a very cute book. The first picture in the book of the pug sitting is exactly like my pug that I own. The only thing I was a little disappointed with was that I thought it was a specific story about a pug. However, it turned out that it was a book, yes about pugs, but each page spread had a different nursery rhyme with the words changed to pertain to the pug. It wasn't what I expected but it was still absolutely adorable! I would recommend it for any dog lover!

These traditional nursery rhymes have been given a pug theme in each stanza.

Delightful illustrations of a pug and a fun way to insert a curly tailed pug into classics!
