5.0 out of 5 stars this should be THE standard for electronicjazzsoundscapes, March 17, 1999

this cd has inspired me. i bought a four track, a sh** load of used records, and (almost) a $ampler, so i could achieve something similar to funki porcini. the result...?

pathetic.

but this cd IS what to aspire to when thinking about the possibilities of the fusion of new technology with some mundane sounds (both musical, human, environmental, and those just made up by funki).

this is by far the best that fp has dished out. "Let's See what Carmen Can Do" is a distant second, though still interesting. It's a little too conformist to the rest of the genre. As the title of "Carmen" suggests, it seems as though Funki Porcini is less centered on an individual artist, and more like Soul II Soul in that it's inconsistent enough in style to suggest the possibility of various artists that come in and go out under the guise of "Funki Porcini"... but that's just my theory. "Love, Pussycats & Carwrecks" is rich in texture and feels like the subconscious music of God. It leads you on a journey through moods and emotions and frames of mind; something to be listened to in its entirety as the context of the work as a whole affects one's perception of the individual pieces and, likewise, the possibility of transcending the reality you're in right now. You'll never hear anything quite like it. It is reminiscent of Miles Davis' classic "Kind of Blue" album in its quietness, subtleties, and its capacity for being a classic/standard.

BUY IT. SUPPORT GREAT AND UNUSUAL MUSIC!

ps. the only thing that may top this album, if not "an empty million pound" or whathaveyou, is if funki porcini combined talents w/ Paul D. Miller: DJ Spooky. That would be the best of both worlds!! a true dialectic of emotion and the cerebral!! GREAT ART!! well, one can only hope.

4.0 out of 5 stars Purring, February 19, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Love Pussycats & Carwrecks (Audio CD)
How to explain this master jazzy sampler? His compositions are not provencial, they take you places far away! For instance, "Venus" is a juant through saturday-afternoon black and white science fiction films; "Carwreck" sounds, well, crunchy-metalic.

A message-as-medium undercurrent clinks through "12 Points Off Your Licence" as a musician "plays" two vodka glasses! The last 8-minute perfomance peice, "Going Down" is definately reminiscent of the sounds and feelings of going down the drain, all muffled notes and gurgly ambience.

FP has a lot of nerve (and humor) to throw hip-hop beats, electro, and cat-purr sounds all into one mix! Somehow, despite the diverse ingredients, he brews up an incredibly pure sound while adhering to his fun-first mantra.

If you like the sampled ambience of the music of The Art Of Noise, The Future Sound of London, Laurie Anderson, or Yello, then you should DEFINATELY try Funki Porcini ....you'll like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funkindeed!, July 14, 2005
This is not boring, just-sits-there, does nothing, predictable music... This is unexpected, moving, busy but calm, very fun music. Call it trip hop if you must. I'll just call it good. He (Funki Porcini is DJ James Braddell) does things with this music. It's active. Even the slower numbers like "Going Down" make you work, but it's not i-hate-this-job-work, rather this-is-interesting-let's-see-where-it-goes-next-work. If you want to call it work and I don't so I'm not sure why I did. So many DJ's and bands just sit there doing nothing. Some uncatchy beat over some droney tones. Boring. Buy this CD if you want to actually hear the musician musicianing. Namaste.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funki Porcini - Love, Pussycats & Carwrecks, May 12, 2011
This review is from: Love Pussycats & Carwrecks (Audio CD)
Funki Porcini's second album, Love Pussycats & Carwrecks, starts off with the feline and sensuous "Purrfect," an auspicious start if ever there was one. "Groover," however, starts in with the off-kilter jazz, with some sweeps that sound almost like a dying vacuum cleaner. Indeed, Funki seems to move away from the smoothness of his previous album and more keen on introducing elements of noise. "Last Song" has plenty, as does "12 Points Off Your Licence," with its modulated horn stabs and compressed squelches of sound. He seems to be exploring the idea of sound: "Carwreck" has a skittering energy, while "Elephantitus" wanders from one idea to the next. "Venus" hearkens back to the earlier album, though it does embrace some of the chaotic zeitgeist. "I'm Such a Small Thing" takes the ambient tack, and "Going Down" takes out the album in that mellow, sleepy vein. While not as immediate as Hed Phone Sex, this album certainly offers its own pleasures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorites, November 1, 2008

I've had this CD for a few years, maybe since it came out, and I've listened to it many times. Unlike so much music that loops the same few notes repeatedly, I just don't get sick of it. Not that I put it on loop either, but I'm not one to do that with anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars like the first cut says, this cd is PUURRRFECT!, March 4, 2000
This review is from: Love Pussycats & Carwrecks (Audio CD)
this is the cd to get for the soundtrack of your life. F.P. creates various moods, tones, and (other)worlds with his symphonic approach to ambient/drum'n'bass. from the slamming opening track(purfect!) to delectable treats like the jazzy "last song", and the Matrix-gone-awry sounding "12 points off your license"-F.P. shows you the pinnacle of ambience/drum'n'bass at its most innovative and imaginative. Finally, after a night of movin'and stone groovin, he sends you home happy with a brain-caresser like "going down"-nuff said

This CD has everything. Stone cold chilled out tunes to high tention breakbeat sample driven masterpieces. Purrfect is most likely the best downtempo set i have ever heard. The following track is calssic IDM style with excillent drum programming and wicked beats. The next noteworthy track is "Carwreks"...i have never heard a DJ use such sounds which would be so annoying by themselves ..they seem like they were made for this CD. Then comes the bizzar and superfast "12 points off your lisence"...all i can say about this one is wow!. I always thought french artists were bit soft but man this guy hits you with in your face jazz and beats big and fast enough to give you a sonic attack! I am definately gonna check out his other Cd's. This guy deservs to be way up there with massive attack and DJ Shadow..i dont think he is marketing himself right. Bottom line..this CD is a classic and i highly recomened to anybody with least bit interest in electronica.
