Like Catching up with an old Friend, January 13, 2009
This review is from: Love is the Reason (Cavalcade of Boys) (Paperback)
I used to read the author's Young Bottoms in Love strips on the web over at Pop Image - and when I heard this new book was out collecting the Cavalcade newspaper stories, I had to snag it. It doesn't read like a compilation of disjointed strips--instead, it all flows together as four separate but connected stories that revolve around--- Love.
I ordered it direct from the author, and I'm not disappointed. There's too many `gay team' dramas these days that ignore the basic human element of the men they depict by focusing on stereotypes and sub-culture scenes and want all the viewers to think it's gay `slice-o-life'; I don't live those weird lives, nor do the gay men in my peer group. `Love is the Reason' doesn't walk in those footsteps rather; it takes us down a different road, a realistic road. Through characters like Aubry, James, Michael, and Tighe we see that finding love is the easy part and living with love is a struggle. When love works, it's glorious--when it fails...well, life is still quite wonderful as long as we have our friends.
Love is the Reason is about four men and their struggle to live with being 'loved'. Not just four "gay men" - but four human beings I know you'll fall in love with, just like I did.
I enjoyed this book, and will most certainly be gifting it to a few friends this Valentine season. Kudos Mr. Fish, and thanks for this great collection.

A deeper Fish, January 8, 2009
This review is from: Love is the Reason (Cavalcade of Boys) (Paperback)
This new Cavalcade of Boys installment is about four emotionally damaged characters who try to cope with life: Aubrey who doesn't want emotional strings in his sex life, Michael the cool bar owner who's recovering from his boyfriend's tragic loss, Chase the sex-exploitative corporate yuppie (a character similar to that of Lance in Kyle's Bed and Breakfast by Greg Fox)and the well known, to Tim Fish readers, Tighe from Strugglers and Cavalcade of Boys, demanding and unsure as ever. Tim Fish presents the characters in a first section, with hints of their past that shall be developed in the sections dedicated to each character. The story begins in a dark mood, that somewhat lightens in the final pages.
I think this one is Tim Fish' most finest work to date, not only for the poignant psychological insight and storytelling, but also for the superb quality of the graphics, detailed, finely crafted and stylish. A masterpiece to read and savour.

pretty much as good as cavalcade, April 19, 2011
This review is from: Love is the Reason (Cavalcade of Boys) (Paperback)
it's a pretty direct continuation, along with a single page comic of, uh, the "Freaks!" couple. it might be my favorite page in the book. also like cavalcade, you can tell the difference between rushed pages for periodicals and finished pages fish added for a collected volume.
it's good. i liked tighe the most, with his messed up, manipulative relationship with german student lars. the sex scenes are more frequent, explicit and also more stylish than cavalcade. the characters have grown up a few years, and that's interesting to consider. no more quickies and short term relationships; even with james micheal chase, his promiscuity is mature and refined. the other two characters have their own hangups, as a result of long term relationships, which get revealed a little ways in. i won't spoil it, but they work it out in the end.
i don't know if im the freak, because ive read other gay stories and get a little put off by the, well, the bitchiness. love is the reason is a good story, and i recommend it, and i believe in the characters. but i don't think id trust them as friends. its the little, amoral things they do to each other, or let be done to them. and i guess that's the point, but it bothers me. so only four stars, but well deserved. also check out fish's blog.
