Notable for their strong female characters and their focus on relationships . rather than on tradtional comic book "action", the stories collected in this volume show how the comic format can be used to create characters and situations as detailed and compelling as in any novel.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Fifty issues--collected into 15 volumes that total 2,000 pages--the Hernandez brothers' Love and Rockets is an enormous achievement that helped to create a new audience for comics. Notable for their strong female characters and their focus on relationships, rather than on traditional comic-book 'action', the stories collected in this volume, and the rest of the series, show how the comic format can be used to create characters and situations as detailed and compelling as in any novel.

Reviewers have compared Gilbert Hernandez's work--set in the fictional Latin American town of Palomar--with that of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Robert Altman. Reading his brother Jaime's work--most of which focuses on a group of Southern California Mexican American women--is like reading Tolstoy, if only Tolstoy had written about twenty-something punk girls. Love and Rockets has certainly earned its legendary reputation among the comic-book cognoscenti, and deserves to be read by an even wider audience. Welcome to the world of Los Bros Hernandez.

5.0 out of 5 stars As entertaining as Archie, July 25, 2010
This review is from: Love & Rockets Vol. 2: Chelo's Burden (Paperback)
In L+R vol. 2, The Hernandez Bros begin to pick up a little momentum. Jamie has already created his MECHANICS world (the ever-loving relationship between Maggie and Hopey) and he begins to let those characters act in their own fashion. Meanwhile, Gilbert delivers the first story in his 'mechanics' equivalent (in epic proportion, not theme or setting), PALAMOR. Both brothers begin the road necessary to lead to finer and deeper stories with this second volume. Their L+R world is getting simpler and more focused. It only gets better from here.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Wife of Baths, October 5, 2009
This review is from: Love & Rockets Vol. 2: Chelo's Burden (Paperback)
The comic book creations of the renowned Hernandez Bros are now available in 19 paperback collections. Book 2 features the first of Gilbert Hernandez' "Heartbreak Soup Stories," where busty bathgiver Luba rocks a town "where men are men and women need a sense of humor." Also included are the wacky adventures of Jaime Hernandez' `Locas,' Maggie and Hopey, as well as "Somewhere in California" by Mario Hernandez (the one story in the book with a male lead). Often the stories are serious; mostly they're funny, but they all prove the talent of those redefining the comic book medium, again.

This comic is unrated: Violence, Nudity, Adult Language, Adult Situations.
