This was a very interesting and moving book. It was difficult to put down once I started reading it. It has family, humor, history, adventure, war -- all vividly conveyed. I have in fact lent it to several of my friends who have all loved it!

Touching, poignant memoir,

I was offered this book to read by one of my own childhood friends, who was part of the author's family. I remember well the author's mother, her brother and to some extent, her father, and reading this account of what happened to them those years before I was even born was a powerful experience. I thought it was beautifully written, and gives a very poignant picture of wartime life in a French town, where there are no battles fought, but where resources are scarce, secrets are kept, and lives disrupted and sometimes at risk for taking a stand.
