I Can't Stop - The Ruse

The Ruse's arena-ready sound distinguishes this band from other popular indie groups. Mixed with intimate and thoughtful melodies, their songs crawl into your head and take hold of your heart.

The Ruse came together in New York City in the spring of 2004 when three long-time friends - singer John Dauer, guitarist Jim Bilus and drummer Jason Young - formed the band with bassist Mark ... Read more in Amazon's The Ruse Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprise find that astounded me November 9, 2011
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I happened upon a song from this band by accident and oh what a find! It really difficult for me to convey an artistic find to other people, but I'll try my best. I'd call this band a cross between Keane and U2. I hope that doesn't offend the band, but the lyrics are in that vein and the overall sound is very radio friendly like both Keane and U2. You can tell they're still young and finding their place, but at least half of the two CD's I now have are very listenable. That's more than I can say for a lot of big name bands. For a pretty new band the guitar work is very appreciable though not overwhelming like that of some older bands. Vocals are crisp, clear and make you want to sing along even though I don't know the words. Their web site is a little weak but I'm guessing that's due to limited funds being a fresh band trying to get some traction in a cluttered business. The song that hooked me is actually on a different CD, "Midnight in the City", the song is the same title. It was on a surfing video I watched online and while the video was cool, I kept asking myself "Who the F is this band?!" These guys have great talent, excellent ability to set a mood and not trample over each other. Vocals are clear, crisp and tight. I wanted to sing along the first time I listened but didn't know the words. If you can catch these guys live somewhere, do it. I'm just about willing to travel to So. Cal to find them playing live just so I can hear them. I don't expect they'll be playing in Denver any time soon just because they're so new. Why they aren't getting played on the radio already is beyond me and testimony to the fact that Corp radio has no interest in new music.

And just in case you're wondering why I didn't give this a 5 star rating, that's because a 5 star rating for me would be albums like Joshua Tree, Cold Roses (Ryan Adams), Foo Fighters Wasting Light, or a few Led Zeppelin releases, just to name a few.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Sex Confusion May 5, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I will start off by saying that this is the first album I have heard from The Ruse and I have to admit it's left me highly impressed.

The Ruse are a four piece from New York whose sound at times is reminiscent of The Fray and Augustana, but with their own unique sound stamp as well.

From the powerful intro of `I Can't Stop' to being eased out with the gentler `Took So Long' this is very accomplished album with some hooks that wedge themselves in your mind after just one listen and some excellent playing from all concerned.

I adore the bass on `The Sweetness' which stood out instantly and really elevates this track. I also love the energy in `Apache' with drums that drive the song forward at a formidable pace and an addictive guitar riff. There are some decent ballads on this album too and `Perfect World' especially stands out. I have to say though, that my favourite track has to be `Hillside Ballroom' which starts with a gentle feel, but soon builds and which has a particularly moving chorus, with another superb guitar riff behind the vocals. This has a very clean and clear guitar sound which suits the song perfectly.

All in all I have to say this is a very good album and I will be trying to track down some of their other albums in the very near future. This is their forth album so there is plenty more music to go and find and to look forward to and with an ever growing fan base it won't be long until we will be hearing more from this impressive band.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.
