Editorial Reviews

Review

... this book takes on an important, previously unexplored topic... The subjects, whose thoughts and advice she here shares, are frank and do not sugarcoat the difficulties that can arise in these relationships. -- Library Journal The great joy of this book is that it is based almost entirely on the contributions of people with AS and their partners... I consider this book to be both accessible and hugely inspiring. -- GAP There is a long history of specialty self-help books regarding love and relationships for adults; however, few books target adults with Asperger Syndrome as the intended audience. Sarah Hendrickx's book, Love, Sex & Long-Term Relationships: What People with Asperger Syndrome Really Really Want, is a welcome addition to this collection of literature. Written primarily as an instructional guide for adults with Asperger Syndrome (AS) and their partners, this book offers a direct and focused discussion about dating, relationships, love and intimacy, and sexual behaviors... this book is recommended for adults with AS and their partners. It provides a concise yet fairly comprehensive set of topics regarding relationships, love and sex and offers a common language for individuals to begin thinking and communicating about with their partners... this book offers clear strategies for overcoming potential barriers to successful relationships that can be utilized by motivated individuals with AS and their partners. -- Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders Many People on the autism spectrum have limited knowledge of how to establish or conduct sexual relationships: drawing on extensive research with people on the autism spectrum, the book openly explores such questions. For the first time people with AS discuss their desires, needs and preferences in their own words. AS attitudes to issues such as gender, sexual identity and infidelity are included, as well as positive advice for developing relationships and exploring options and choices for sexual pleasure. This accessible book is an invaluable source of information and support for those with Asperger Syndrome and couples in which one or both partners has Asperger Syndrome, as well as counsellors and health and social care professionals. -- Autism US A really good read. As a mother of an eighteen year old youth with Asperger syndrome, I was totally able to see where the author was coming from. Very informative and a useful guide for any Aspie Adolescent. -- Asperger East Anglia Sex is not often openly talked about, even less so when in relation to autistic spectrum disorder. This book is accessible, informative for psychologists and serves as a self-help guide for people on the autistic spectrum and their partners. The text addresses the issues often faced while in, or searching for, a committed sexual relationship. It gives clear and tangible advice about ways to improve communication in this context...The frankness of this book is refreshing. Self-help books examining neuro-typical sex would benefit from taking such a straightforward, uninhibited approach. -- The Psychologist

In seeking to understand AS, I have read a number of books and found this one to be supportive in its simplicity and directness. Although my relationship didn't succeed for a number of reasons (one being his erratic behavior), I still feel that reading this book provided me with insights and perspectives about us that I would otherwise not have considered. Recommended to those who are trying to understand AS a little better. So many books and articles focus on AS kids or educational challenges, but not on this most important topic of trying to build a romantic relationship.

I didn’t find this book to be helpful or enjoyable. Its writing reminded me of a just-good-enough term paper written for a high school class – just a rehash of information found on the first page of a Google search and a lot of paraphrasing from Wikipedia. The author did not make any claims that her research could be generalized to the population of AS people as a whole, fully disclosed her sources (online forums and a few people she knew personally). Because of the small population that raged from age 20s -70s, there really wasn’t much insight that I got from the book which was one thing the author intended.

The quotes from those with AS were not very insightful. I don’t have my copy of the book anymore, but the excerpt had a quote that, to me, was quite indicative of how helpful and insightful the book was as a whole: On internet dating, an AS man says “I was looking on the internet. I wanted to be wanted. It is interesting, fun and exciting to be around someone. I also wanted sex.”

In other words, there isn’t much in the book that you wouldn’t be able to find for free on the first page of some Google searches and because her sample size was so small, there really wasn’t anything I found helpful though I did appreciate that she realized the shortcomings of her research. I like to think of those with AS as though they were a culture. They are individual, unique people who happen to share some major traits in common. In comparing AS to a culture, imagine if someone were to write a book on “Asian” culture, asked 30 Asians (age range from 20 to 70) on the internet who were not very articulate some random questions on love, sex, and long-term relationships, and imagine how helpful the results would be.

Lifts the lid on many Asperger's traits. As an NT this book explained the last 15 years of my relationship with an AS partner. By understanding our past I could move forward.
