Roger shows an intense depth of understanding of relationships, women, humor, and family life. When my girlfriend caught me reading it the first evening it came, she took it from me out of curiosity and wouldnt let me have it back! Dont buy this book if you have anything else to do. 1.0 out of 5 stars Not for me
I loved this author's Shingling the Fog and my wife has read and liked other books by him. But Love, Sex and Tractors is a tasteless dud. It rambles along at a slow and boring pace, and just isn't funny. In fact we were put off by negative remarks about women (written in jest, but where's the joke?). Buy something else by Mr. Welsch.

Love, Sex, and Tractors

When asked to define love, I could not find my tongue. I wished to expound on its nature. To praise a woman whose beauty has launched a thousand ships, and men have fought, and bled, and gotten sepsis and scurvy over. Perhaps Ovid said it best: "Love, it is a kind of warfare." Yup, just like a man to compare love with battle, but within the minds of men it is. We struggle with our pride, pay homage to our honor, and seek an answer in our hearts. But love isn't an action movie. We don't get to blow anything up or have car chases, and the only thing a man risks breaking is his heart.

Nope, men just don't understand women. It's not our fault. Women attend "Women School." You don't think it's a coincidence that all women say the same things, demand the same things and complain about the same things? Yep, women old and young thin and fat, mothers and daughters. They're alike because they have all attended women school. What do you think they're doing in the ladies room? It doesn't take five gals to go to the bathroom. It's a class called confusing men 101.

You'd like to tilt the balance. You could grab one of those relationship books from the self-help section, but they are mostly written by women for women. Wouldn't you like to read a book from the male perspective? If you have an easier time understanding how a carburetor works than the female brain, then you don't have to look any farther than Roger Welsch author of Love, Sex and Tractors and the instructive follow-up Everything I Know About Women, I Learned From My Tractor. Welsch is a folklorist, humorist, and writer who has appeared on the CBS News Sunday Morning program with a segment called "Postcards from Nebraska".

Love, sex and tractors? You betcha. When a man writes about tractor repair, he is writing about love sex and relationships, and when a man is writing about love, sex and relationships, he is writing about tractor repair. The way a guy approaches these tasks is pretty much the same. Folks, these are not books filled with hypothetical theories written by therapists with more letters behind their names than a bowl of alphabet soup, but practical advice by a guy who's been banished to the workshop with nothing but a pillow and a pair of fluffy, bunny slippers. Roger gives real and practical spousal survival hints and explains exactly where you screwed up and how to fix it.

You might as well face it. Sooner or later, probably sooner, you are going to mess up. It really doesn't matter what you have done wrong. Or that you have done anything wrong at all. Although, if you are a typical, red-blooded male, you have almost certainly done something wrong, and that is where the male generic apology comes in. This is one handy piece of advice that you should laminate and carry with you at all times.

Old Roger reveals the mysteries of life, love and axle grease. With his shop manual of love, he will guide you through the language of love (men and women speak a different language), finding the right woman for you (probably not at the strip club), courtship (don't make your first date a monster truck rally), and if you are already married how to collect tractors without being thrown out by your spouse.
He offers shop techniques for when your daughter starts dating starting with, "If you pull into my driveway and honk, you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up." And delves into the differences between the sexes:" Yes means no, no means no in all cases where no does not mean yes, and yes maybe means yes, but sometimes also no.

Course, why fix something that ain't broken? A man knows that any engine needs proper preventative maintenance. The best way to keep a motor purring is to change the oil regular and give it tender loving care. So, take that extra minute to put the toilet seat down, and at least maybe try that thing called laundry sorting. Tractors and restoration may be easier, more gratifying, quieter and easier to get along with, but women smell nicer...

This review is from: Love, Sex and Tractors (Paperback)
I have all of Rogers Books and each one gets better. Love, sex and Tractors was by far the the best. He continues to keep the reader laughing. It is the most thought provoking and informational book I have read in a long time. The only thing that would improve his books would be to paint his tractor pitured on the cover green with yellow wheels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor at it's best, October 13, 2000

This book is great. I laughed so hard I wet myself. It probably helps that I'm in Roger's age group and mindset (I collect old tractors, too), and I can really identify with his "adventures", having been there myself. This is humor in the Dave Barry, Bill Cosby, or Patrick McManus style, not mean, not negative, (I'm not making this up!) just funny. It is real people doing real things, and Roger is expert at pointing out the humor in everyday events. The book shows there is a fine line between a hobby and lunacy. I expect I will have to buy several copies, loaning one out will certainly mean goodby forever.

Welsch is not martial or mechanical marvel. But his grasp of writing entertaining books is complete. Reading Love, Sex and Tractors is like having a conversation with an old friends. Plus you are guaranteed to burst out laughing before finishing the first chapter. What follows after that is a rollicking adventure covering some very unusual subjects. After all, the title is "Love, Sex and Tractors!" You don't have to know a blame thing about tractors to enjoy this books. But by the last page you will certainly want to know more about this hugely popular hobby . . . and its favorite author, Roger Welsch.

This is yet another great book by Roger Welsch. He integrates his passion for old tractor restoration with his zest for life in general. A great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Captain Nebraska's tractor books are great !, October 13, 2000

My family blames Roger Welsch (aka. Captain Nebraska on the ATIS website) and his three tractor books ( "Old Tractors and the Men Who Love Them" and "Busted Tractors and Rusty Knuckles" are the other two ) for starting all of the antique tractor craziness around our house ! Read them and Enjoy !

4.0 out of 5 stars Where were the tractors?, November 27, 2000

I enjoy reading Mr. Welsch's tractor books, often laughing out loud (and driving my wife crazy). I enjoyed the anecdotes about friends and females, but missed the tractor stories. Maybe it has all been done? I think not. The problems overcome and the lessons learned in "Old Men . . ." and "Busted Tractors . . ." were rich in both amusement and (some) educational value. This book, unfortunately, left me empty at the end. Funny stories, but a little too much on the "Love and Sex" part; and yet, in some ways, not enough. Read it, enjoy it, but don't expect as much as his first two tractor books.

5.0 out of 5 stars If Rog only wrote that book 30 years ago, October 13, 2002
This review is from: Love, Sex and Tractors (Paperback)
When I started reading the book, only few moment passed before laughed so the bed was shaking. Couldn't help shouting YES! several times. Tried to tell her what was so right and so funny. All I got was The Look and The Sigh. She don't understand why there's this 3 ton pice of metal where she could park her car. This book should be mandatory for all male above the age of 13. If you don't understand the woman in your life get Roger's book - period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humor, History, Risque, NOT Bawdy. Fun tales for folks that tinker with antique cars, trains, Tractors., July 4, 2011
This review is from: Love, Sex and Tractors (Paperback)
Roger was one of my college profs at University of Nebraska Lincoln Centennial Education Program. His post was in Nebraska History? Should have been Folk Lore, or such.

An outstanding course Roger sponsored was Black Smithing. Brought in portable smith shop to local steel company. We smithed, banged n sweat all day. Made stuff. Learned a lot. I can smith a bit. Found another smith to teach me more. No, don't think Roger attended.

Roger can spin a tale on many topics. Truly loves antique tractors. You'll laugh and learn a bit about life, mechanics and other topics.

You'll also come to admre his wife n daughter for surviving and encouraging his hobbies.
