Book Description

Love in a Small Town was one of three fiction finalists in the Indiana State Library's recent Best Books of Indiana 2007 contest, which is held in conjunction with the Center of the Book, Library of Congress.

It's late June when Sam Champion drives into an Indiana town and sees a "Grow Browning" billboard, with the population, 3653, in changeable numbers, like those on a scoreboard. Sam, an Arizona professor, wants to sell the house he inherited, fast, and return to Arizona, for a prestigious promotion. Lily Madison, his red-haired neighbor is an accident-waiting-to-happen, but beautiful, determined, and smart, she has other plans for Sam and Browning. Lily brightens Sam’s life, but he doesn’t realize how much until he tries to walk away.

Editorial Reviews

A breath of fresh air in the romance industry!! How long has it been since I've had the chance to read a solid, old-fashioned, boy meets girl kind of a romance?
Love in a Small Town is an excellent, lighthearted read. Ms. Schuler writes solid characters that feel like best friends. Reviewed by Robyn Roberts for Once Upon a Romance

"Against the backdrop of a tender love story, the author depicts a realistic commentary of a small town in the Midwest, struggling to maintain its identity. A small town Indiana at its best. The Hoosier author introduces you to real people, who can become good friends. This romance warms the heart and leaves you wanting more." ~ Best Books of Indiana, Fiction Judges

From the Author

I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I liked writing it.  I am an Indiana native and the plight of Browning is similar to that of the town where I lived.  Industries are leaving and young people leave after high school and don't come back. This is the plight for many communities who aren't located near an Interstate and businesses fail to thrive. Lily is determined to help save Browning where she's the mayor and a friend of the residents. Sam Champion plans to sell the house next door to her and move to Arizona. They are a challenge to one another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love in a Small Town Review December 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was the first eBook that I've read and I was very pleased with it. It made for a quick read, finished it in just 2 evenings. It has a sweet storyline and you will likely fall in love with the main characters (Lily and Sam) right from the start. If you're looking for a charming little romance and you like a small town vibe then you won't be disappointed in this one. And it's free -- so, definitely add it to your library!

(Also, I oftentimes find it nice to know the demographic of the reviewer when trying to deside on an item.
So, I'll share that I am a 26 year old, married, mother of 2, from Southern Indiana.)

Enjoy your new eBook!

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll want to visit this Small Town! September 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When you fall in love with the main character in a book, you know you're in for a great read. Sam is totally charming, and what woman wouldn't love to have him as a neighbor (and hope he'll become more than a neighbor!). I loved the banter between Sam and Lily, too. In fact, all the characters are well-developed, multi-dimensional and original.

The story is sweet, light-hearted and fresh. This cozy Small Town is one you'll want to visit, and stay right to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Story - and CLEAN February 12, 2012
By Bethany
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love a good romance story but so often they are just filthy. This book was not only fun, quirky, and enjoyable - but CLEAN too! The characters have spark and passion with each other - but never go beyond kissing.
The characters were very likable and the small town was just what a good small town is - but without too many stereotypes that seem to plague other small town books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun story, sweet innocent romance January 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
-Read On Kindle-
NO GRAPHIC SEX, safe for your young teen to enjoy! Plot is well flushed out, only noticed one editing error; once Browning is spelled Broning. Worth a couple hours to enjoy it. I believe I snagged it for .99 or free through.

Man moves back to hometown to sell family house. Meets neighbor who intrigues him. She turns out to be the MAYOR, as well as a shop owner. They bond and fall in love, but only ever kiss. He is planning to sell the house and accept a great job in another state. She spends the book trying to change his mind. He has to decide what he really wants and what his priorities are. (Happy ending)

Verdict: Worth reading, safe for teens, nothing by kissing in it. Worth normal price if that's what you're looking for. Definitely worth it if you catch it on sale.

2.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't finish it August 28, 2012
By Claire
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
After all the great reviews I expected this to be a fun, enjoyable read. Wrong. It is all tell don't show, there is no chemistry between the characters, the situations are contrived and the dialogue is stilted and lacking in humor or charm of any kind. It reads like a teenage author's first efforts and the writing just isn't good enough to merit all the great reviews. I read 75% of it before just giving up. Even though it's free, I recommend avoiding this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Romance February 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked this book, especially for its being clean. The main couple, Sam and Lily were extremely likeable. I loved the idea of the small town setting. The descriptions worked well and the personalities of the sub-characters leaped off the page. The plot of the book is perhaps very simple, yet for me it worked. I wanted to read a light romance with a happy ending and this was that. I appreciate that the author didn't go for the "same old" plot twists of many romances and shied away from including sex. The best romances don't require that. There were some minor problems with sentence structure and word placement, especially toward the beginning of the book. Overall, this is a lovely story for an afternoon's read. I enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clean and entertaining June 29, 2012

This story contained an aspect I appreciate that is so seldom seen these days--plenty of romantic tension but no graphic sex. I loved the characters, and enjoyed the story development. I want to help grow Browning. For me, this book is a keeper.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only reason for 3 stars is the plot line November 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought the premise of the book was cute. I mean the storyline is as old as pie and mostly predictable but it was still a cute premise anyway. BUT....

Let's start with the hero shall we? Sam is a self-centered, egotistical a**hole. He only thinks about himself. Even when he realized that he'd fallen in love with Lily, it was all about how he didn't want love to mess up his life. If I was the heroine and Sam ditched me like he did Lily, I would have kicked his butt to the curb.

Lily was a sweet character. I rooted for her from the beginning. But she seemed a little too much like a doormat. She took Sam back after he basically ran off with another woman. Instead of putting his foot down with his supposed ex, he followed the ex at the drop of a hat. She was supposed to be this strong, innovative woman who's overcome hardship and she lets Sam walk all over her.
