Beatlefan Magazine - by Al Becker................
Fans will get a kick out of these energetic reworkings of Macca's songs by Atlanta area acts. The selection of tunes is a nice mixture of hits and lesser-known selections. Generally, these versions of the songs tend to be a bit harder-edged than the originals. Particularly notable are a melancholy rendition of "Love in Song" (Big Fish Ensemble) with haunting violin; a driving take on "Band on the Run" (Sonomama); an upbeat reading of "My Brave Face" (Star Collector) that owes more to Elvis Costello than McCartney; a heavier version of "Come and Get It" (The Lizardmen) with guitar replacing the piano and spot-on harmonies; an imaginative reading of "Another Day" (Paul Melancon); and an interesting midtempo acoustic guitar version of "My Love" (The Bordellos) that is almost unrecognizable. Also worth a listen are the album's covers of "Jet" (Blacklight Posterboys); "Name and Address" (The Cashmen) as it might have sounded if a young Elvis had done it; a blues-rock "Hi Hi Hi" (Adam Leland) featuring the harmonica as lead instrument; a nicely done "Temporary Secretary" (Orange Hat); a decent if unimaginative "Every Night" (Chain Poets); and the drumming on "Helen Wheels" (Rollin' Machine). The clever packaging has a front cover take-off on the "McCartney" cover, with Georgia peaches replacing the cherries, and inside there's a variation on the "Run Devil Run" Atlanta drug store shot. - Al Becker

It's great to hear new versions of these songs. Too bad there are no audio-clips. Most cuts are energetic and most will make you think of these tunes in a new light. Recommended for all Macca fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Love In Song rocks like nobody's business", June 3, 2001

Well, isn't this a hoot? On Love In Song, the featured parade of local talent sidesteps McCartney's Beatles years in favor of his and late wife Linda's work with Wings and on his various solo outings. Most of the material here is drawn from Wings' Band On The Run and Venus And Mars periods as well as McCartney's first couple of solo efforts.

Wings has, and most likely forever will, take a back seat to the Fab Four. Though the rambunctious love of early rock and roll undoubtedly carried over from one group to the next, Wings' spacey, sentimental sound was often lost on disenchanted listeners still yamming about The Beatles' demise. That is not so of the artists featured here, however. Love In Song rocks like nobody's business from start to finish with Atlantans of various styles and genres coming together in a grand celebration of McCartney and Co.'s power pop legacy.

Mods on the run The Lizardmen perfectly revitalize "Come And Get It," an infamous, infectious pop gem written by McCartney for the boys in Badfinger, who were recruited by Apple Records shortly before the label went belly-up. Said audio perfection is achieved once more by The Blacklight Posterboy's rendition of "Jet," from Band On the Run, which still sounds like it was wired directly from a telephone cable somewhere in deep outer space. Atlanta pop mechanics Kenny Howes & The Yeah! bow in with a killer medley of "Venus and Mars/Rock Show" while the ferocious femmes in Catfight! cook up a splendid "Girls' School" complete with fetching cheers.

Other highlights include Christopher Robin's revved-up "Let Me Roll It," the rockabillyfied "Name And Address" courtesy of the Cashmen, Paul Melancon's appropriately melancholy "Another Day" and Big Fish Ensemble's dense and creepy delivery of said title track. Hell, the whole damn thing is pretty much a highlight if you really want to know the truth.

Love In Song is a refreshing change of pace from so many recent half-assed, overdone tribute albums. The all-Atlanta lineup works well and provides us with both old familiars and new acquaintances. So, instead of picking up some thing where Sugar Ray and Faith Hill further lobotomize the songs of your youth, go get yo'self a locally-produced face full of Sir Paul's post-matrimonial musings. Ahhh, what a nice pop rock rush, but without the nasty nosebleeds in the morning. (P.O. Box 2727, Decatur, GA 30031)
