This should be a guilty pleasure but it is so good I can't feel bad about listening to it. This is so much fun to hear!
Songs I've always found way too "schmaltzy" are so cleanly presented, with such an absence of histrionics, that I am finding them very enjoyable. These renditions clear the mind of the many awful versions that these and similar songs have suffered elsewhere, including on American Idol. Not a hint of any singer except Donny Osmond here - no copying or mimicing the originals - but respect and taste are on display as he captures the essential subtleties that made the songs memorable (and adds many of his own seemingly effortlessly). If you had told me that Donny Osmond would sing crystal clear covers of "you are so beautiful to me" and "lets stay together" that I would like, I would have said you were crasy. So I guess Mr. Osmond has gotten me to do what George Michael was unable to inspire in me: to listen without prejudice. OK Donny, you have a new fan, one of many in response to this I suspect. Your hard work and attention to every note have paid off beautifully!

Love Songs of the '70s is a fine CD by Donny Osmond containing classic love songs from the 1970s. These tunes are sure to bring back memories for those of us who first heard these songs on the radio! I know they bring back great memories for me even if Donny didn't sing them originally. The sound quality is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done.
"I Can See Clearly Now" gets the royal treatment that would make Johnny Nash proud! Donny sings this with lots of positive energy; and the backup chorus works wonders to enhance even further the natural beauty of this optimistic number. Donny's voice is in excellent form, too--he never skips a beat! In addition, "Sometimes When We Touch" features Donny performing this ballad with great sensitivity; and this impresses me greatly. Donny sings with all his heart and soul; and just one listen proves it! Neil Sedaka's "Laughter In The Rain" easily rivals the original version; and when Donny sings this the number takes off like a jet! Donny's excellent diction and his uncanny sense of timing make this a very special number. "Laughter In The Rain" is clearly a major highlight of this album. "When I Need You" by Leo Sayer shines like silver and gold combined when Donny performs this with panache; and the music that accompanies him is elegant without ever drowning him out. "You Are So Beautiful" by Joe Cocker is very moving; this always tugs at my heartstrings and Donny gives this all his heart and soul. The strings enhance the beauty of the number and the guitar arrangement is very well done as well. Listen also for "How Deep Is Your Love" originally by The Bee Gees; Donny truly was born to sing numbers just like this one! Donny handles the subtle tempo changes like the pro he was and still remains; and the chorus backs him up very nicely to make "How Deep Is Your Love" a very solid number. Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again Naturally" is very pretty when Donny Osmond sings it; and he infuses so much genuine feeling into this ballad that it truly amazes me. The musical arrangement complements his singing to perfection. The CD ends strong with Donny Osmond performing "If" by Bread. "If" is a number that stuns me with its beauty and Donny does great justice to this number. Donny Osmond can really sing out a tune; what a modern day crooner he truly is! This is wonderful for Donny Osmond fans; and people who like love songs from the 1970s will want this album also.

I grew up about the same time as Donny Osmond, I thought that he was so uncool, I liked the J-5, and I thought Michael was so cool. It's funny how things turn out. MJ left his religious affiliation to further his career, and it worked, DO didn't and his career died. In the Mid 80's I was working as a corporate sales manager for a wholesale/ retail company that had our show case store in Orem Utah, and I used to run into Mr. Osmond, and one of his kids on occasion, he looked angry and bitter, unless he was looking at his child and then he looked peaceful. I didn't know him, I didn't talk to him I just observed. Over the years, we have learned both what a freak MJ is and some of the difficulties that DO went through.
But all that is beside the point of this review, this is a very, very good album of covers of ballads, from a decade of very good ballads, except in that we don't always know about people, and so judging music on what we think about someone's coolness might be counterproductive. More to the point, Donny's voice is a finely crafted instrument on the whole CD. So if you are a DO fan, get this CD and see how well this artist has matured. If you are not a DO fan, forget who is on the cover, and give it a try anyway, these are excellent vocals on excellent songs. If you want a very nice CD of love songs, which have been interpreted in an excellent fashion, you will be amazed as soon as you put this CD in your deck!

Every song prompts heartfelt memories, every note performed to perfection. Donny's incredible vocal performance on this CD, coupled with brilliant arrangements is not to be missed! In this case, the old saying, "nothing beats the original", just doesn't apply!

I just received this album which I purchased through Amazon. I absolutely love it. I love his renditions of the songs. He put his own spin to these songs and his renditions are either superior or equal to the originals.
I have always hated the song "When I Need You" regardless of who sings it but Donny actually made me love the song. It sounds terrific now. Donny Osmond is timeless. I have enjoyed listening to his songs and his voice through the years and I know many others have too and we will most certainly continue enjoy litening to them. His talent and his ability as a musician cannot be disputed. I mean how many musicians do you know can play as many instruments as Donny Osmond can? He plays 26 instruments - fluently. Donny Osmond is a musician in all sense of the word!!! There are some here who are accusing Donny of ripping customers off. Well, I do not feel ripped off. Donny didn't make this album to rip anyone off. Doony Osmond recorded this album because: - he is a musician, - he is a recording artist, and - he did it for his fans. Donny, keep your albums coming. I love you as a singer, a musician, but most of all I love you as a person who has never gone "Hollywood" through your years of fame and I salute you for that.

This CD is great. Donny Osmond's voice is just incredible. He has such an open quality. It is smooth and beautiful while still being masculine and soulful - but he never goes overboard on the soul. You listen to the songs and they sound like you remember them but with a modern twist. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this CD and hope the Donny will be making more.

Donny is here to stay,
This review is from: Love Songs of the '70s (Audio CD)
I must be honest. Even as a Donny fan...I was hesitant to buy this album.
I absolutely love track #3---"Let's Stay Together" Donny should have done an album of love songs sooner. He has such a smooth voice, and adds his own signature Donnyisms in the right place. A bit of groove has to go with "Will It Go Round In Circles". Just in my opinion Donny can sing anything & I'll enjoy it. I don't think he tries to be anyone just himself. Not Barry Manilow, Neil Sedaka, the BeeGees and definitely not Clay Aiken. If you want to be reminded of the '70s...this is worth a listen. He adds his own passion to these songs. Give it a chance.Under a Blanket of Stars |
