I first bought this album because of the catchy tune, "I love you period." I thought it an ok tune, so i bought the cd. It's fairly easy to write an "outstanding" critique, while not quite as entertaining as a "sour" critique. I say easy because there are a hundred synonyms for both "outstanding" and "sour." On the other hand, an "average" critique is a perspiring exercise in wordsmithing. I figure that since five stars divided by two equals two and a half stars, then two and a half...

I first bought this album because of the catchy tune, "I love you period." I thought it an ok tune, so i bought the cd. I listened to it from the first and its like a pulse-beating-page-turning-book you cant put down. There is not a bad song on this album. I was was forced to chose my least favorite, it would be "I love you period." For the ultimate "LOUD" song crank up "Lost Highway". A great in your face tune relationship song with a twist. Its not about losing your lover, but about the jilted one proclaiming his soon to be freedom with the line, "if you dont think im leaving baby, count the days that im gone!" Obviously one of my favorites on the cd. And "Knocked up" is a great tune. I love the play on words. "Look at what you started", another rockin song to be cranked loud. "Pick up the knive," and "The one i am,". This is, indeed a seriously underestimated album/cd. I purchased cd only after i realized my cassette was becoming worn out. In the styles of the great southern artists, Bocephus, Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels, and others, this is a definate must have album for any party. It will definately get the crowd dancing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dixie, July 8, 2005
It's funny, I have been reading about this album in record guides lately and discovered I Love You Period was a minor radio hit at the time. I don't remember that at all. I do remember really liking this album when it was released although I focused on one great song that none of the reviewers really comment on: Dixie Beauxderaunt.

Dixie Beauxderaunt is really rocking and Dan Baird tells a hilarious story in it. I have put this one song on dozens of mix tapes over the years that I made for friends. I'll have to go back and rediscover the rest of this album.

This is, ex-Georgia Satellite front man, Dan Baird's first solo attempt. He succeeds very well at it too. His country/rock songs are well-written, foot-taping fun. Baird's strength is in his lyrics. Although the music has good rhythm, it is nothing that really stands out. The music is really the medium in which Baird gets his lyrics across.

He writes from a light-hearted standpoint as can be determined from the title of the album. This is a great sing-along album, as the words are catchy and simple. It's obvious that Baird had fun making this album, and you can hear it come across in his music. Baird's "I Love You Period" is probably the most famous from this album, but there are quite a few gems in here as well. Other winners are "Pick Up the Knife", "The One I Am", and the crass "Knocked Up".

"Love Songs for the Hearing Impaired" is great to pop in the cd player of your car, put the top down (or at least the windows), and take a drive along a winding two-lane country highway. It's not a work of art, but it's good enough you won't even notice.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best rock albums ever made, June 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Songs for the Hearing Impaired (Audio CD)
I am not exaggerating one bit when I say that this record is one of the best rock albums ever made. I kid you not when I say that when this record came out in '91 or '92 I listened to it almost every night. I was in college and every night when I got home from class and was getting ready to go out to party Dan Baird was cranking in the CD player before I ever figured out what I was going to wear. I still listen to it now and it has definitely stood the test of time. This album doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. It's just a bunch of guys having a great time and blowing through a set of great rock tunes one after the other seemingly without stopping. The first half is very fast-paced with all of the songs strung together as if they just played and played. There doesn't seem to be any studio trickory either. The production is perfect in its lack of production if that makes sense. Baird is a fantastic guitar player with a great voice and definitely a way with a lyric, "You got knocked up and I got locked up. I guess you'd say that we both got screwed." Brilliant! Highlight tracks for me are "look at what you started", "seriously Gone", "What I am" and the classic "I Love You Period." If you already own "Buffalo Nickel" don't expect the same sound on this record. Though BN was a great record as well it seemed to be more carefully planned out than this one. Maybe Dan thought he needed to be more serious the second time around - I don't know. Either way if you like the southern rock sound and you like your music turned up loud and played almost as if it was a jam session then grab this cd now.

I bought this album as soon as it was released, being a Satellites fan and all, and just fell in love with it. Like many others here say, this album doesn't try to be anything else than a full tilt rockin' good time. Plenty of cool songs, brilliantly funny lyrics and THE SOUND!! Can a rock album sound better than this? Man, listening to this makes me feel like I'm three feet away from a Marshal 4x12 blasting away.

One more thing I'd like to emphasize is the playing on the album - don't get fooled by the three cord structure of most of these songs, Dan and producer Brendan O'Brien are jammin' up a storm, backed by some seriously grooving bass and drums! And thanks to the excellent production, you can really enjoy all the guitar textures - this is top notch rock/country playing!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Kickin' Southern Rock!, March 16, 2005

I was sad to pass by this page and see not a word to praise the fine joyous CD that's given me so much pleasure! Years of it, too-
there is no way NO WAY to keep a frown, to stay still, to stay grim...while you listen to this guy kick'in ass!

The first 4 tracks will do it, way more reliable even than jug band music (sorry JS)... the chick who's probably "gonna miss a lot of schoooool" (from Kocked-Up) will see you bobbin' smiling, and back in the human race -as much as ever you were. Whatta a shame that stuff *this good* can languish here with no audience, no praise- do yourself a favor and get the CD. (Doesn't the wit of the CD's title tell a little something about this guy already? )

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not art, it's rock'n'roll, July 27, 2000

...and none the worse for that. Those rock critics who kid themselves that they're dealing with a major art form probably didn't like this album. I do - Dan Baird is no Brecht or Shostakovich, but he doesn't try to be. Here, he plays to his strengths as a rock'n'roller with a talent for producing hard-rocking, cleverly phrased ("She was born down in Thibidaux, Louisian', The victim of a short attention span.") songs about not-too-bright people in tricky, but not-too-tricky situations.

He's been doing that since his days with the Georgia Satellites, of course, but this album is his most complete piece of work. A good indication of how well it all works is that I can't imagine the tracks in any other sequence - each seems to follow naturally from the last. It's sympathetically produced too, with an open texture that lets you appreciate the tight, bouncy accompaniment to Dan's words. This, for me, is how American rock music ought to sound. It's a wonderful album and deserves to be better known, but then that would spoil the fun for those of us that do know about it, wouldn't it?

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect party album, May 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Songs for the Hearing Impaired (Audio CD)
This is in my opinion a very underrated album from the former Georgia Satelites singer. If there were any justice in this world, this album would have sold million of copies. My personal favourites are: Julie & Lucky, I love You period, The one I am and, knocked up and Baby talk. i.e almost every song!!

This album is a lot of fun to listen too. While it isn't as cohesive as his second album "Buffalo Nickel" it is still a good album. He's got alot in common with Lynyrd Skynyrd or Steve Earle. While Steve seems to be a country artist that dabbles in rock and Skynryd a rock band based in country, Dan seems to be balanced in the middle. It's easy to dismiss him as a novelty song writer but his lyrics are a lot deeper then the funny word play of I Love You Period. On both albums he sings songs about the simple folk of rural small town America. They're usually white trash and slightly eccentric but always interesting. This isn't in my top five albums (Buffalo Nickel is) but it's still a pleasure to listen to.
