This is a pretty weak entry as 10- to 12-selectio-CDs just do not cut it in today's market. It's also interesting to note that only one of the seven Adult Contemporary hit singles he had from 1966 to 1977 [not one of his hits was able to score on the more lucrative Billboard Hot 100] is included above.

The first was Summer Love in 1966, a # 13 b/w I'll Try Lovin' You Less, and that B-side is included here whereas the hit side is not. Almost a full year would pass before his second hit, I'll Always Remember (track 5), made it to # 36 b/w Daydream (not included) in April 1967, and then another year before his third hit - Visions Of Sugarplums - topped out at # 33 in April 1968 b/w Flame (neither is included).

Keeping to that pattern, he next scored in March 1969 with The Wonder Of You [# 38 and omitted] b/w Words (track 3). That was his final hit for Columnia. Seven years would then pass, and a new label, 20th Century, before Everytime I Sing A Love Song peaked at # 7 in July 1976 b/w Love In The Shadows. You might think those two, at least, would make an album entitled Love Songs - but no. Later that year Steal Away reached # 34 b/w I Let You Walk Away, and in February 1977 he had his last charted hit, The Drifters' Save The Last Dance For Me, which reached # 22 b/w Patch It Up (none of the four included here).

This personable host of TV shows like Hollywood Squares and That's Incredible has a pleasant voice, but clearly could not match the likes of male contemporaries such as Al Martino, Andy Williams, Mel Carter, Ed Ames, Engelbert Humperdinck, Tom Jones, and John Gary, who captured most of the audience for that type of singing in his late 1960s period. And when he came back in the late 1970s he was faced with competition from John Denver, Barry Manilow, Glen Campbell, and Michael Murphy.

I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF JOHN DAVIDSON'S SINCE I WAS A YOUNG GIRL I SAW HIM IN CONCERT A FEW TIMES AND HE IS MULTI-TALENTED. NOT ONLY CAN HE SING BUT HE CAN PLAY INSTRUMENTS TOO. HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN A WONDERFUL SINGER AND EASY TO LISTEN TO. HIS ALL-AMERICAN PERSONALITY SHINES THROUGH IN HIS RENDITIONS OF THE SONGS ON THIS CD. IF YOU LOVE JOHN DAVIDSON, YOU WILL LOVE THIS SELECTION OF LOVE SONGS, THAT HE SINGS SO BEAUTIFULLY.
