5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Sexy, and Entertaining--all at once

2.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly boring
I liked Curott's Book of Shadows enough to attempt this book. I don't know if I'll ever finish it. A little more that halfway through I finally had to admit that I was completely bored, I didn't like anyone in the story, and it was totally obvious how things would turn out anyway. The author comes across as a codependent doormat who pushes her way into a marriage...

I loved Ms. Curott's first memoir, BOOK OF SHADOWS, for the way she was able to tell an interesting story while imparting all manner of fascinating information--from feminist history to magical traditions to religious theory. She's done it again with THE LOVE SPELL. I was sucked into the story just as if it were a novel, but also learned all kinds of cool things like techniques of sex magic, more feminist history, relationship advice, and most importantly, the eroticism of spirituality (and vice versa).

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is longing for a fulfilling, loving relationship. And anyone who's looking for a great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, January 4, 2005
By
This review is from: The Love Spell: An Erotic Memoir of Spiritual Awakening (Hardcover)
This, the third of Phyllis Curott's books that I've read was more than I expected. Any woman (or man) who has ever longed to find their soulmate, should read this book. Anyone searching for love should read this book. It is not a love story, not in the typical sense -

While the first chapter was a little slow, I was totally engrossed by Chapter Two. "A Memoir of Spiritual Awakening" is an apt description of the story contained in the pages of this work.

Ms. Curott's descriptions of her spiritual and sexual growth are vivid and honest. I appreciate the honesty with which she shares her journey. Such openness and honest communication is rare in today's literature.

Read this book, you and the one you love will be inspired!

5.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey, February 8, 2005

A good friend pointed this book out to me. And, I couldn't have read it at a more perfect time. Reading about Currott's journey instilled hope in me about my own path towards love, which includes self-love.

It's wonderful that Ms. Currott chose to include a rather helpful reference section in the back. While I am not Wiccan, I was inspired to cast some spells of my own! I was entranced by the artful creativity of the magical world that she describes and partakes in; we truly can find and or create beauty and magic in our own lives, if we choose.

I found this book nurturing, candid, inspirational, informational, and beautiful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for true love.

Thank you Ms. Currott for sharing and please keep on writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Warts and all!!!, March 6, 2005
This review is from: The Love Spell: An Erotic Memoir of Spiritual Awakening (Hardcover)
In telling her story of her search for love, Phyllis Courott doesn't just highlight her success, she illuminates her mistakes. She doesn't simply try to tell us how to; she shares examples of how not to. Couragous and extreemly enlightening. Wiccan or not, this book is for anyone looking for their mate in this lifetime.

2.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly boring, January 3, 2007

I liked Curott's Book of Shadows enough to attempt this book. I don't know if I'll ever finish it. A little more that halfway through I finally had to admit that I was completely bored, I didn't like anyone in the story, and it was totally obvious how things would turn out anyway. The author comes across as a codependent doormat who pushes her way into a marriage because she liked the idea of being married, not because of her actual relationship. Her lover is terminally selfish and immature. The only reason Curott seems to fall for him is due to physical attraction and sex. As in her previous book, Curott's many friends are so superficially drawn it's impossible to keep straight who is who and what their individual characteristics are. The exception is Nona, who takes the roll of the perfectly enlightened teacher who always has to perfect tidbit of wisdom to impart at the perfect time then she silently withdraws to allow the author to make all her own mistakes. The conversations everyone has are incredibly pedantic and unrealistic. Like others have said, there are a few interesting ideas mixed in here and there, but as the book goes on, they become more and more infrequent. Perhaps if about half the book was edited out, it would be easier to get through.

4.0 out of 5 stars You can learn from it..., March 24, 2005

I think Phyllis Curott is a Witch that we all can learn alot from. You can learn more from her stories than most dictionary sized manuals on Wicca. So I definately recommend reading this book, especially before you do ANY love spell. Not because this is a cautionary tale that will convince you not to, but because it will lead you to do a richer fuller spell with a more aware and realistic attitude.
I only gave it 4 stars though because as a novel it is slow and a tad on the tedious boring side. Especially compared with her first book Book of Shadows which I reread all the time just because the stories so good. Still I recommend this book as a great learning tool if not the most riveting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definite Comeback, July 12, 2005
Love Spell is readable, enjoyable, with all sorts of valuable insight into a failed marriage, and empathy with the yearning and desire of any single woman searching for the right man. There's magic in these pages, and those who have made magic manifest in their own lives will understand what I am referring to. Her most recent book represents a comeback, since Witch Crafting was not widely read. Currott is at her best when she writes from personal experience about events which actually happened to her. More importantly, she manages to impart how magic played a genuine role in her life - she achieves autobiographical catharsis and simultaneously shares her wealth of experience with others, so that they may innovate in terms of the magic she describes, and apply it to their own lives as they see fit.

On a more mundane level, the story line is sometimes difficult to follow, and it is not always easy to maintain a timeline of events which makes sense. Currott seems to be attempting a more experimental, lyrical writing style in her third book, and some readers may find it more distracting than beneficial. But the strengths of this book outweigh its weaknesses. Her treatment of the daemon, Dionysius, and the god-like incarnation in the 1950's superstar Jimmy Dean is fascinating. I visited Dean's museum in Indiana right after finishing this book, and realized how accurate and thought-provoking the author's interpretation actually is.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book to read - very high recommendation!, March 3, 2005

This review is from: The Love Spell: An Erotic Memoir of Spiritual Awakening (Hardcover)
This book provided an insight into Phyllis' life that I found more than intriguing. This book, in combination with her previous two books ('Book of Shadows' and 'Witchcrafting') also allowed me to look at my own life with a different lense. Phyllis' books allow the reader to learn and apply the knowledge gained from the books in a tangible manner. I highly recommend 'The Love Spell', as well as Phyllis' previous two books!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read about the nature of love and sexuality, October 3, 2005
This review is from: The Love Spell: An Erotic Memoir of Spiritual Awakening (Hardcover)
Phyllis Curott does not spare herself in this candid and insightful book about her own journey with love and sexuality. She writes about how women sell themselves out, often without realizing it, for the sake of a love relationship. It's not about men betraying women - it's about unreal expectations women have about what love is really all about. It's about growing up, facing ourselves, and becoming women who can love freely because we are taking care of ourselves. And it is about allowing men to be who they are, without expecting them to don the armor and jump on the white horse to ride to our rescue.

Men will gain great insights into how women think and feel about the cultural messages we are given about their roles in love and marriage. Men will find themselves challenged to assess their own inner mythologies about women - the damsel in distress who needs to be saved, or the oft-lived pattern of looking for a woman to be more of a mother than a partner.

Relationship truly begins when we can face our own patterns and accept ourselves, and those we love, for who they are.

Interspersed in the narrative are her magical experiences with the inner lover - the part of us that holds the energy of the opposite, and which must merge with us in the Sacred Marriage for us to be whole.

Beautifully written. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is on a path of consciousness. You do not need to be pagan to appreciate this important and timeless story of spiritual freedom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just "Girl Talk", March 9, 2006
This review is from: The Love Spell: An Erotic Memoir of Spiritual Awakening (Hardcover)
Love Spells is not just another romance novel. It also is not just a Girl Talk. Phyllis Curott shares her deepest self with her readers. How a women feels aout sex, courtship, and love.

While erotic it is not vulgar. It tells of feelings that are normally shred only in a womens diary or with her closest female friends.
It pulls aside the vail that has kept a womens side secret for so many years. While written about women by a women this book is worth reading by men as well.
To often men are ignorant about what a woman feels, needs, want and dreams of. As a 66 year old male I can tell you that we have too much pride and ego to ask let alone listen to those whom we believe we know so much from talking with the other "guys" or reading mens magizines. Quite a bit of the time w get more misinformation then knowledge. The women on the other han has been raised not o volunteer th information This has caused a wide gulf between the two genders. A gulf that Ms Curott has sought to fill by having the courage to address th most intimate sides of the female experiance.
I personally believe that every manshoul read this book and buy an etra copy fothe women in his life it will start conversations made by socioty too long secret
