5.0 out of 5 stars Stellar Singer Stop Smoking!
I find it hard to believe nobody has reviewed Love Spit Love...maybe they're too busy watching MTV. This singer's voice is so heavenly he could read novels as song and still remind me of a bird of paradise I once saw in New Guinea after a rainstorm- this music will make you dance in the dark, meditate, and walk in the cold night w/ your eyes searching out stars. 3.0 out of 5 stars (three and a half stars) consistent, but never takes flight
Richard Fortus (later to join Guns N Roses) replaces John Ashton on lead guitar, and, for some reason (probably legal or contractual), the band changes its name from "The Psychedelic Furs" to "Love Spit Love." Is Fortus an improvement? It's hard to say, but the first Love Spit Love album is not a heck of alot different than the Furs last ("World Outside"), and that's...

It's a commentary on the brutality of capitalism & a searing, dispairing way of getting through it...or losing yourself in the gutter puddles trying to. Daggerlike irony & exhileration- that's Love Spit Love. But when he plays live, he should lose the packet of cigarettes so the voice lingers.Longer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Falling without tears, January 7, 2003
This review is from: Love Spit Love (Audio CD)
a classic that works on every level. Powerful, electrifying, moody, soothing, ecstatic songs performed by advanced musicians who seem inspired by their virtuoso leader.

There is nothing stale or unoriginal on this work. It is explosive, accomplished rock like nothing else.

Enjoyyyyyyyyyyyy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, different music that Furs fans and non-fans will love, September 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Spit Love (Audio CD)
I guess I lived in a cave in the 80s because I never heard too much of the Psychedelic Furs, Richard Butler's old band. But when I heard the Love Spit Love songs, "Change in the Weather" and "Am I Wrong," I fell in love with Richard Butler, Love Spit Love and the Psychedelic Furs. His voice is so different than any other singer and the music is different and exciting. The lyrics are intriguing. I had the hardest time finding this cd a few years back, and now it's easy to get here. I highly recommend that you give this band a chance. You won't be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the great albums of the 1990's, July 9, 2006
This review is from: Love Spit Love (Audio CD)
Richard Butler left his milleu of the "beautiful chaos" New Wave of the Psychedelic Furs and delved into a more resonant and less synthetic sound with this, the premiere album of Love Spit Love. It begins with a sonic assault of guitars and drums with "Seventeen" and ends with the somber, thrumming and dream-like "More" and inbetween these songs are more truly beautiful, sorrowful, and wonderful songs than anything Richard Butler has done before. Songs like "Green", "Half a Life", "Change in the Weather" and "Superman" are all incredibly evocative, sometimes louder and sometimes softer but all are powerful. The highlights of the album lie with the one hit yielded from the album "Am I Wrong", which is a song which digs deep into regret and melancholy and romance and the lyrical and musical brilliance of "Codeine". This album is very reminiscent of the works of another truly great band R.E.M., and I can't help thinking that some of the inspiration for this album are from R.E.M. songs. Just looking at the titles of some of the songs: "Superman", "Green" and "Wake Up" (R.E.M. having a song called "Get Up"). Maybe it's just coincidence, but one way or the other, this is one of the best albums of the 1990's and is a must-have for any Richard Butler fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music - review from an old fan, December 2, 2003

I've been listening to LSL for almost 10 years. When the CD came out in 1994 I bought it. I play it occasionally and it always puts me in the best mood. My favorite song is "Am I Wrong?"

This is a great album, well worth a second and third listen. The musical elements that made the Psychedelic Furs great can all be found in this CD. "Am I Wrong", the best track on this CD, is an incredible song.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Wake Up!" This is Richard Butler at his best!, March 16, 2001
By
This review is from: Love Spit Love (Audio CD)
I bought this CD when it was first released and I still can't get enough of it. This CD is amazing and, in my opinion, eclipses most of Richard Butler's work with the Psychedelic Furs (and that is saying A LOT!). There is so much variety on this album. It contains exploding rockers like "Seventeen" and "Change in the Weather," brooding melodies like "Superman," "Please," and "Codeine," slower tracks that beg to be sang along to like "Half A Life," "Am I Wrong," and "Wake Up," and different sounds that defy categorization like "Jigsaw" (is that a kazoo I'm hearing?), "St. Mary's Gate," and "Green" (with an orchestra!). In otherwords, you get "More" with this album than with most other CDs in the "alternative '90s" music bin. What's more, I think Richard Butler's vocals have never been better! The melody, passion and emotion of his voice are revealed on tracks like "Am I Wrong" and "More" better than they were on any of the Furs material I've heard. If you are a Psychedelic Furs fan who has yet missed out on Love Spit Love, buy this CD! It is worth the price (this release includes cool music videos!). You will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff <> Psy. Furs, December 2, 1998
This review is from: Love Spit Love (Audio CD)
LSL is good, passionate, intelligent, and creative rock, and frankly, is quite different than the 80's sound that the Psychedelic Furs threw down (though I like them as well; not as much). This album is, in my view, an underrated gem.

For fans of eighties music, or those who simply enjoy finely crafted, lush sounds, the debut CD by Love Spit Love is a great choice.

I've been a long-time fan of the Psychedelic Furs, (my favorite Furs CDs are Forever Now and Mirror Moves). Some of the tracks on this disc are uneven, but I would consider the song "Am I Wrong?" as strong as anything that the Furs put out. I prefer the first Love Spit Love CD to the second one...so if you are only going to pick up one, I'd recommend starting here.

I first heard about Love Spit Love the band when I heard their song "How soon is Now" I instantly fell in love with the song. The shortened version is actually the theme to the hit television series "Charmed" on the WB network. I love Love Spit LOve, they have a unique sound that makes a great vibe. This cd is a best buy. I think everyone should own it because at first I din't want to buy it for just two songs that I liked but now I can't take it out of my cd player. It isn't just a good cd it's the best!
