Review

"Through Nichole's brilliant and creative storytelling, timeless Bible characters come to life in such a way, it's as if I'm walking in their shoes. And more than that, it's like they've walked in mine, because I find a little piece of me in every one."
--Natalie Grant

"We had the same experience reading this book that our whole family has had listening to the amazing lyrics Nichole wrote for The Story CD. Her willingness to use her incredible gift in such a brace and honest way makes the real people of the Story and the God of all our stories profoundly more real."
--Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman

"Turns out one of the best living lyricists is also a great author with some super-fresh insights and angles on the greatest story ever told. It's like Nichole actually had lunch with each of the characters before she wrote the chapters."
--Randy Frazee

"I've always loved the writing of anyone who could take the alphabet and turn it into a little army of twenty-six soldiers, send them forth to march across a page, and occupy the territory with beauty, depth, poetry, humor, and truth. This is the talent of Nichole."

If you're already familiar with Nichole Nordeman as a brilliant lyricist, then you know she is unquestionably one of the greatest writers on the planet!! I don't know what I can say about her writing that hasn't already been said. Her ability to transfer Bible characters and make them relatable in a very personal way is divinely inspired. Love Story, much like her songs, is genuine, insightful & thought-provoking. However,in her book she is much more raw--baring her soul, admitting her weaknesses & exploring the Christian walk & bravely asking the questions most wouldn't dare. Love Story is a captivating and easy read, yet forces you to dig deeper when it comes to our Christian faith and God's word--this is the genius of Nichole. She is beyond gifted, eloquent, clever, witty & honest!! Read her book--you will not be disappointed!!

I have said for years that I wish Nichole Nordeman would write a book and my wish finally came true and it greatly surpassed all of my expectations. Each story, whether Bible stories or her personal stories, is told with such passion and vivid imagery it as though you are watching it unfold right before you for the first time. Each page holds a fresh new perspective and revealing (and sometimes deeply convicting) truth from the Bible stories I have heard countless times in Sunday School, sermons, Veggie Tales, and vacation Bible School.

But really, that's what I was expecting. What I wasn't expecting (in a good way) was her gripping, at times heart breaking, honesty. You feel as though she is confiding in you, her close personal friend rather than reading a nationally published book. I lost count of the times I thought, "Wow, I've always felt/thought that about faith/the church/God/life but I didn't know it was ok to say it, much less write it." It is refreshing to hear (or read I suppose) someone say, "This is where I am and how I feel and people may not think it is ok, I don't even know if it is ok, but all I know is God knows my heart and He will meet me right where I am. Not where I want or need to be."

Word of advice: buy more than one because you are going to want to talk about it with your friends and they tend to give you fewer blank stares if they have read it too!

I've been a fan of Nichole Nordeman's music for years. The way she bends poetry and music around vulnerability and truth is astoundingly beautiful. Her book is no less lovely. Penned by a naked hand that isn't reluctant to uncover the pain and humor that can result from being transparent, Nichole gives fresh perspectives on well-known Biblical cast members alongside that of a real, identifiable woman who finds bits of her own journey within the triumph and tragedy of The Story.

Using personal anecdotes and reflection, Nichole draws sweat and blood from each Biblical character's story as well as her own, one moment causing the reader to laugh aloud, the next, to be moved to tears. There isn't a single chapter that could be considered baggage or "filler" -- each one exudes the scent of the profound without losing its accessibility or humanity. And, since each chapter ends with the lyrics to the corresponding song from the album, Music Inspired by The Story, I highly recommend downloading the album and listening to each song as you complete the chapter.

This is one of those rare books that deserves frequent return visits, prime shelf space when not in use, and a fresh flourescent highlighter to be used to mark the beauty and wisdom that shows up in every single chapter. Get your hands on this book as soon as you can -- it's a keeper. I received the book from Worthy Publishing for the purpose of review, but after reading it I bought another copy here at Amazon and had it sent to a dear friend. It's just that good.

This author is in tune with what the blessings of our God can be for us now, as they were in Bible times. Thank you, Nichole, for this insight.

I bought this book after seeing an excerpt posted on Jason Gray's fb page (a Christian singer I have listened to for a long time and love) I have listened to Nichole Nordeman's songs and love her voice, but had no idea she was also a superbly talented writer. I can't recall having read a book where I am laughing out loud one minute (seriously.....laughing so hard the dog was giving me weird looks) and then a few pages over, tears running down my face. She makes the biblical characters come alive in such a unique way that I had never considered before, and her willingness to open up about her own life just endear you to her even more. I have told everyone about this book---I am SO glad I bought it; you won't regret it if you do!!!!

In the synopsis for Love Story, it says that this book “reveals how real” the people of the Bible are. I think this is a very accurate depiction of this book.

Each chapter of Love Story retells one of the “Sunday School” Bible stories. The same stories that we probably become so familiar with that we slowly lose some of the bigger message of the story beyond the Sunday School lesson. Each one of these stories is visited with anecdotes from Nichole Nordeman’s life, demonstrating how she arrived at some of these fresh glimpses.

I enjoyed the book. Nordeman’s writing style is humorous and conversational (I felt like I Was sitting across from her talking about her day over coffee). Every detail in the chapter seems to build up to a realization about a particular person in a Bible story or a new truth that could be gleaned from the story. One example that has stood out to me (as both a humorous chapter and in a “wow, I never thought of it that way” kind of way) is about Moses. She compares Moses to a mother, and in many ways, she has a strong argument for it. But the point of the chapter comes down to servitude.

This book is by no means a way to really dig deep into scripture. What this book is however, is a chance to revisit some of those same familiar Bible stories and to perhaps see them again for the first time. I know I gained some new ways to look at some of those stories again and to find perhaps more applicable meaning to my own life. I do wish however, that there was a bit more “Bible” and less anecdotes overall for the book. In some ways, I feel I might have learned a bit more about Nichole Nordeman than the Bible in the book. So I guess is depends on what your purpose for reading the book is.
