Book Description

April 6, 2004
Anna Jeffrey's debut novel, The Love of a Cowboy, was praised as "an authentic and powerful love story."* Now she returns to the dusty town of Callister, Idaho-where a stranger is about to bring the wildest of passions to a woman with a heart of ice...

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set in the cozy town of Callister, Idaho (population 635), Jeffrey's second contemporary western romance (after The Love of a Cowboy) brings together two emotionally battered urban divorces for a second chance at love. When reclusive Alex McGregor, a Los Angeles real estate agent, first spots hunky ex-cop Doug Hawkins, she goes after him-with a heavy duty car jack. Her actions seem almost justified, however, when the reader learns that Doug is trespassing on her land to have a romantic rendezvous with Alex's least favorite townie, the girlfriend of her irresponsible, untrustworthy ex-husband Charlie. After a mysterious fire destroys both cabin and Charlie, Doug tries to help Alex, but various people contrive to keep them apart, including a powerful local logger who's after both Alex and her land and an appealing forest ranger who's smitten with Alex. The protagonists' own deep trust issues also keep them from consummating their relationship until the novel is more than three-quarters of the way through. The delay is delicious, however, and so is the suspense. Jeffrey's hot-blooded heroine, hot hero, complex story line and polished writing make this a riveting read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Book, August 27, 2004

I became a Jeffrey fan when I read Love of a Cowboy. This one just may be better. Alex is a beautiful, wounded soul who cannot withstand Doug, another wonderful but wounded human being. Irrestible love and dogged determination break down the emotional walls and bring them together so they can stop fighting each other long enough to battle against a true villain. It's a real page turner, one of those that keeps you saying "Just a few more pages, and then I'll stop." But you won't stop, because the book is too good to put down.

4.0 out of 5 stars easy to walk away from, December 29, 2006
This review is from: The Love of a Stranger (Paperback)
This was the third book I'd read by Jeffrey. The first two, I gave 5 stars. I couldn't put them down once I started reading. This one wasn't like those. I was glad when it was over. Alex is too mean and self centered and took too long to come around. Her battle with Doug went on and on and on. Finally, she gave in. I'm glad this one is over. I do look forward to reading other books by Jeffrey in the near future. Happy reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Characters to love and hate and love. A great book!, July 17, 2004
This review is from: The Love of a Stranger (Paperback)
In the small town of Callister Idaho, Alex McGregor, a hard headed lonely woman is known by the locals as the witch on the mountain. Doug Hawkins, an outsider trying to escape problems of his past finds love in the most unexpected place. His feelings un-returned by the scared battered soul hiding in the shell of Alex McGregor poses a challenge to be won. During the many twists and turns of this story I really fell in love with these characters both with their quirky dispositions and their true to life personalities. This story has you wrapped up until the end in mystery and intrigue for both the characters and its complex plot. I hope to read more like this in the future.
