5.0 out of 5 stars No Disappointment, October 22, 2000

"carloboy" (EDMONTON, ALBERTA Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Love Techno Pop (Audio CD)
This is one of the best compilation CD's I've seen representing the 80's techno pop genre. There are 3 CD's, each about 70 minutes long. Most of the songs are in their complete 12" extended form. Included are some of the most danced songs from the clubs of the 80's. Songs like: "Blue Monday", "Smalltown Boy", "Relax" brought techno pop to the forefront of dance music. There are a lot of songs that are difficult to find like the seductive, "Outside Looking In", by Dream Sequence and "The Night", by Azul Y Negro. Personal bests of the collection are the songs by: B. Movie, Belouis Some, Cabaret Voltaire, and Spandau Ballet (a beautiful, powerful dance ballad!!) If you enjoyed the music of the early to mid 80's with an emphasis on dance then this this the perfect 3 CD compilation. Also in the collection is the "I Love Disco" available in Volumes 1,2, and 3. Each volume contains 3 CD's each.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loads of new wave classics--12" versions and original single versions--not quite all `techno pop', May 28, 2008

This review is from: I Love Techno Pop (Audio CD)
Definitely not as good as volume 2 in terms of 12" versions, this compilation offers a lot of original album versions, but in most cases because there either was no 12" version, or the 12" version was either a dub or mostly instrumental. Most of these tracks have appeared on numerous compilations in the 12" versions, but you may find a few versions previously undiscovered on CD. The only real gripe is with the title...not all of these songs are "techno pop". But they are all great new wave classics! Personally, I bought the entire collection for the 12" version of Steppin Stone by Modern Rocketry because the shoret version is on their "Get Ready" compilation CD. Track times:

CD1

1. blue Monday...new order (7:27) (the original long LP version/12" version)
2. don't you want me...human league (3:54) (LP version--dance version is mostly instrumental)
3. it's my life...talk talk (6:14) (the definitive club version of this song--there were quite a few mixes)
4. smalltown boy...bronski beat (8:58) (12")
5. gold...spandau ballet (7:12) (12")
6. shout...tears for fears (6:28) (LP version!)
7. tainted love...soft cell (8:57) (12" version)
8. original sin...inxs (5:12) (LP version--the 12" version was a non-vocal dub)
9. look of love...abc (3:26) (LP version--12" mix was a dub)
10. temptation...heaven 17 (4:37) (long version--but not the near 11 minute mix on some 12" singles)
11. we close our eyes...go west (3:47) (LP version)
12. imagination...belouis some (3:33) (LP version)
13. too shy...kajagoogoo (3:38) (LP version)

CD2

1. wouldn't it be good...nik Kershaw (4:25) (LP version)
2. situation..yazoo (5:42) (LP version)
3. nowhere girl...b-movie (6:27) (12"version)
4. outside looking in...dream sequence (4:50) (12" version)
5. vicious games...yello (4:18) (not the 12" version)
6. dance hall days...wang chung (7:18) (12" version)
7. moments in love...art of noise (10:14) (long version)
8. never again...classix nouveaux (3:48) (LP version)
9. letter from my heart...steve allen (5:21) (12" version)
10. hipnotised...cabaret Voltaire (3:37) (short version)
11. it's my party...dave stewart & Barbara gaskin (3:43) (I don't think there was an extended version of this song, even on the 12" single)
12. O l'amour...dollar (2:55) (short version--but, um, who cares? It's a cover of Erasure, and you're simply going to opt to listen to the Erasure original EVERY time!)
13. never ending story...limahl (3:26) (LP version)

CD3

1. Relax...Frankie Goes to Hollywood (7:22) (NY mix)
2. yeh yeh...matt bianco (3:19) (short version)
3. Vienna...ultravox (4:53) (LP version)
4. wot...captain sensible (5:36) (I think this is the 12" version faded early!)
5. walk the dinosaur...was not was (4:22) (LP version)
6. dr. mabuse...propaganda (4:58) (LP version)
7. cruel lovin...AKA (6:04) (long version) (holy Information Society sound alike! Pure Energy, anyone???)
8. papa's got a brand new pig bag...pig bag (6:00) (12")
9. the night...azul y negro (3:10) (short version)
10. IOU...Freeez (8:40) (long version)
11. stepping stone...modern rocketry (5:28) (12" version)
12. talk about...phaeax (5:34) (12")

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but......, January 20, 2007

No cigar here. Hate to disagree with the other reviewer but it's not most are 12" singles.
Don't You Want Me? not
It's My Life? not
The Look Of Love? not
Temptation? not
We Close Our Eyes? not
Too Shy? not
Wouldn't It Be Good? not (track I bought to replace my 12" record)
Nowhere Girl? not
Vicious Games? not
O L'Amour, 2 minutes 50 seconds? NOT
Never Ending Story? not
Talk About? not
The Night? a remix, an edit at the wonderful time at 3:09! Which is really sad since I have the 12" single on "blanco y negro"
A Few Highlights:
Blue Monday 12"
Smalltown Boy 12"
Gold 12"
Tainted Love Suite 12"
Dance Hall Days 12"
Letter From My Heart 12" tecno pop? replaced the bad pressing that the label left on the intro. A Treasure but out of place with these tracks.
Relax 12"
Vienna 12"
Steppin' Stone 12" and a treat to the ears.
Overall a nice collection of tracks but far from the 12" singles that have been known from this label. Nice to collect oldies, but not for true collectors.
