This is the story of twelve-year-old Teddi Mervis, and her fight against cancer, her impending death and the inspiration she gave to thousands. The story begins with the diagnosis of a brain tumour, and her three-year battle for life - a battle she eventually lost. "For the Love of Teddi" tells about a unique band of people who separately and together helped her deal with suffering and death, and who themselves were forever changed by the experience. These people, inspired by Teddi's story, helped form and organization whose sole purpose was to make the brief lives of children with cancer as happy and rewarding as possible. The organization, Camp Good Days and Special Times, Inc., has become one of the largest and most successful organizations of its kind in the world.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In recounting the story of Teddi Mervis, who died at age 12 in 1982 from a brain tumor, Buttino, professor at St. John Fisher College in New York State, takes the reader on a three-year journey through many lives. We share the fierce love of Teddi's mother and father, parents of two other children, as they battle the inevitable. The family circle widens in the search for a cure, and then for accommodations for their dying child. This led to the establishment of Camp Good Days and Special Times in upstate New York, begun by Teddi's parents, friends and medical support personnel to provide a place where cancer-ridden children might experience an enjoyable normalcy in their brief lives. Teddi's story will offer strength and inspiration to others undergoing the devastating ordeal of childhood cancer.

5.0 out of 5 stars For The Love of Teddi, September 12, 2009

This is a very touching story of a child who has bravely fought a malignant brain tumor-she passed away, but her story goes on! Children like Teddi are heroic and really set out to prove that in spite of the gravity of the illness the child has, that particular child shows determination to do whatever they can for themselves! That is the main reason for reading about books like this! Dawn E. Lowenstein

This review is from: For the Love of Teddi: The Story Behind Camp Good Days and Special Times (Hardcover)
Do not pick up this book if you are not prepared to weap...and be inspired as well. One cannot help but be moved by the story of a young girl (Teddi) who faces cancer with the strength and dignity rarely seen in adults--much less children. This book is wonderfully written and I was left wondering how I could feel so sad for the plight of this girl and so inspired at the same time. A must read.
