Product Description

Poems from the Film Il Postino. The poems collected in this book are at the heart of the film Il Postino, a cinematic fantasy spun from an apocryphal incident in the life of the Chilean poet and Nobel laureate, Pablo Neruda. Together they show why many consider Neruda to be the finest love poet of the century. Few writers of any age have described the pleasures and torments of erotic love with such un-sentimental directness and sensual precision. Here, too, we find Neruda at his most accessible, the language of his odes and lyrics refined to the point at which it achieves, in critic Jean Franco's words, "the naturalness of song". This short selection draws on work from throughout his writing life, from the famous early collection Twenty Love Songs & a Song of Despair (1924) to the key works of his maturity, Residence on Earth (1935), Elemental Odes (1954) and the autobiographical Memorial de Isla Negra (1964). It offers an enticing glimpse of one of modern poetry's greatest masters. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic and Sensual, February 4, 2001
By Judith E. Pavluvcik (Dreaming of the beach in Hawaii, but living in the reality of the desert in Arizona!!) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Love, Ten Poems by Pablo Neruda is a romantic short collection by one of the most sensual and romantic poets I have ever read. Neruda draws all of your senses into his world and you want to stay there, never to leave. One wants to find the beauty as he paints it for you, the reader. His wife is the muse of most of his love sonnets. As Neruda says, "Love is so short, forgetting is so long."

I recommend this incredible poet to all who love to read poetry and to those who long to find their love and especially to those who have that love in their life. Neruda's romance will stir your heart and have you soaring.

Read it with your significant other and the emotions will carry you both up and away. Neruda's poems are powerful and their beauty sears into your heart with his words echoing long after. These poems were featured in the movie, The Postman. You cannot help feeing affected by the power of Neruda. He has to be one of THE most powerful masters of the written word.

5.0 out of 5 stars After you read the book, listen to the CD & watch the film!, January 31, 1999
By arnied@usa.net (Philippines) - See all my reviews
I never read Neruda before. I was opened up to his world through the movie "Il Postino," a bittersweet, funny fictitious movie about Neruda and an aspiring poet (a postman). He recited poems there and....I had to watch it again and again. Then, I discovered the CD with all these name stars reading his poems: Sting, Andy Garcia, madonna, Ralph Fiennes. As if that wasn't enough, I found this book! Ahhhhh! Romantic bliss on those dreamy nights with your signficant other. Believe me, if you want to sweep me off my feet (and I believe my female friends would all agree), send a girl this book, and you'll get her attention (and later, maybe her heart).

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely beautiful, May 19, 1999
By A Customer
I found this book after watching Il Postino and thought it would be a great way to work on my Spanish since it's bilingual. These poems are so touching and strong. I recommend this to everyone who can appreciate the beauty of love and the flow of Neruda's poetry.

Neruda at his best. These are elegant, beautiful poems to read and re-read. It is a small slim book, but every poem is a jewel. Keep it by your bed and read before you sleep.
