5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic and Sensual
Love, Ten Poems by Pablo Neruda is a romantic short collection by one of the most sensual and romantic poets I have ever read. Neruda draws all of your senses into his world and you want to stay there, never to leave. One wants to find the beauty as he paints it for you, the reader. His wife is the muse of most of his love sonnets. As Neruda says, "Love is so short,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good poems, good film, bad book
Like other reviewers, I like Neruda and enjoyed the film in which these poems are featured. I wish I could say the same for this book. That it contains only ten poems in Spanish together with their English translations is no mark against it. That it was rushed into print in order to cash in on the film's appeal did not prevent me from buying it. But the volume has been...

I recommend this incredible poet to all who love to read poetry and to those who long to find their love and especially to those who have that love in their life. Neruda's romance will stir your heart and have you soaring.

Read it with your significant other and the emotions will carry you both up and away. Neruda's poems are powerful and their beauty sears into your heart with his words echoing long after. These poems were featured in the movie, The Postman. You cannot help feeing affected by the power of Neruda. He has to be one of THE most powerful masters of the written word.

5.0 out of 5 stars After you read the book, listen to the CD & watch the film!, January 31, 1999
This review is from: Love: Ten Poems (Paperback)
I never read Neruda before. I was opened up to his world through the movie "Il Postino," a bittersweet, funny fictitious movie about Neruda and an aspiring poet (a postman). He recited poems there and....I had to watch it again and again. Then, I discovered the CD with all these name stars reading his poems: Sting, Andy Garcia, madonna, Ralph Fiennes. As if that wasn't enough, I found this book! Ahhhhh! Romantic bliss on those dreamy nights with your signficant other. Believe me, if you want to sweep me off my feet (and I believe my female friends would all agree), send a girl this book, and you'll get her attention (and later, maybe her heart).

I found this book after watching Il Postino and thought it would be a great way to work on my Spanish since it's bilingual. These poems are so touching and strong. I recommend this to everyone who can appreciate the beauty of love and the flow of Neruda's poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neruda grabs you and won't let you go!, May 19, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Love: Ten Poems (Paperback)
I highly recommend Pablo Neruda's Love: Ten Poems to everyone. In this piece, Neruda exposes his skill of using description to create beautiful language. Love: Ten Poems exemplifies language at it's best. In this book, Neruda brings life to his words and makes you feel more alive than ever. Pablo Neruda's Love: Ten Poems kidnaps its readers and takes them hostage to another world. In this dream world, Neruda uses unique descriptives to pull your elusive emotions from your chest and lay them out for you to stare upon. Before reading Love: Ten Poems, I had never seen love in "moon lines", watched hope "travel in the wind", or gazed upon the despair of a "shattered night, all between two covers of a book. Pablo Neruda's Love: Ten Poems is a must read for all. By depicting emotions with flowing words, Neruda brings timeless enjoyment to his readers. If you want to experiance Language at its best I highly recommend reading Pablo Neruda's Love: Ten Poems.

5.0 out of 5 stars May Your Heart Break Loose On the Wind, August 18, 2006

POETRY by Pablo Neruda

And it was at that age...Poetry arrived
in search of me. I don't know, I don't know where
it came from, from winter or a river.
I don't know how or when,
no, they were not voices, they were not
words, nor silence,
but from a street I was summoned,
from the branches of night,
abruptly from the others,
among violent fires
or returning alone,
there I was without a face
and it touched me.

I did not know what to say, my mouth
had no way
with names
my eyes were blind,
and something started in my soul,
fever or forgotten wings,
and I made my own way,
deciphering
that fire
and I wrote the first faint line,
faint, without substance, pure
nonsense,
pure wisdom
of someone who knows nothing,
and suddenly I saw
the heavens
unfastened
and open,
planets,
palpitating plantations,
shadow perforated,
riddled
with arrows, fire and flowers,
the winding night, the universe.

And I, infinitesimal being,
drunk with the great starry
void,
likeness, image of
mystery,
I felt myself a pure part
of the abyss,
I wheeled with the stars,
my heart broke loose on the wind.

When I first read this poem, something within me blossomed. It was as if Neruda had found a way to pry open my soul and let the True Light, the True Love, and the True Life of my life to finally come forth; naked, unashamed, and gloriously beautiful.

Even though this book only contains ten little poems, you will get so much enjoyment out of each and every one of them. I even gave a copy of this book to someone whose primary reading interests were that of Mad Magazine and the classifieds and he said he never imagined that reading could be so sensual and yet so soulful.

May your heart and soul break wide open and may the radiant jewels that are within come forth for all to see.

Peace and blessings...

This review is from: Love: Ten Poems (Paperback)
If you love the Academy Award winning film based on the enchanting novel by Antonio Skarmeta, Postino, Il: The Postman, as much as I do, you must obtain a copy of Love: Ten Poems, the sensuous, rapturous collection of ten essential poems by the beloved Nobel Prize winning poet from Chile, Pablo Neruda.

These very accessible love poems of Neruda are at the pulsating heart of the superb film, Il Postino. The film is a burning, hot-blooded, joyous celebration of poetry and life and love. And this collection of poems is direct from the heart, mind and soul of Latin America's greatest poet.

Even if you have no interest in the film, even if you have no particular attraction to poetry, you can fully appreciate this magnificent collection of Neruda's love poetry. This is a bilingual edition with the original Spanish on one page and the corresponding English translation on the other.

I love these ten poems and I go to them often when my soul is in need of uplift. I revel in the penetrating metaphors of passion, of love, of life. Love: Ten Poems is a slim volume that the lover of poetry and novice alike can keep close to the heart and return to again and again, to allow the imagination to soar and the spirit to fly.

If you are not yet a poetry lover, I do believe this collection will convert you. It will open the pathways for you between metaphor and reality and encourage your heart to break "loose on the wind."

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Pablo's work, February 22, 2011
This review is from: Love (Paperback)
This book is in Spanish & English & contains 10 poems (47 pages) some of which are in other books of his so if you want more of his work I'd go for a longer book however this is a good introduction if it's your 1st purchase.

I find his poems are best read slowly to absorb & savour the images they create.

I love his poetry although I tend to have favourites of his poems & am not so keen on others, having said that I do think his best love poems are the most beautiful & sensual I've ever read.

If you like love poems this is a favourite book of mine The Poetry of Passion (for People with a Pulse) it's a different style to Pablo's because most of it rhymes but it's sensual, humerous & easy to relate to.

~ from "Poetry"

Normally I write down my impressions of the poems I'm reading. While reading the poems in this book I was however stunned into silence. These poems are best read for pure pleasure. The only thing that did surprise me about this collection was the little touches of horror I'd never noticed in other Neruda poems. Like in the poem about the mermaid she swims away to her death. Why could she not have swum away to freedom? Or as Neruda contemplates a woman being silent he also wishes her dead, but at the end is glad she isn't. I guess I thought this book would only be filled with the most romantic poems ever written so I was a little surprised by sad endings and morbid contemplations. And yet, still the poems were beautiful. Perhaps some of the most beautiful poems I've ever read. If you are new to Neruda's poetry this would be a great place to start. If you have read many of his poems, this book may have a few surprises. I think you would also love: The Essential Neruda: Selected Poems (Bilingual Edition) (English and Spanish Edition)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Saddest Lines, December 19, 2009
This review is from: Love: Ten Poems (Paperback)
Reading Neruda heightens a sense of passion and awakening to the soul. My favorite, Tonight I Can Write the Saddest Lines holds a special meaning for me. I still read Neruda and think of what could have been, had I not made a huge mistake. If you have a true love that was lost, or are just passionate about life, by all means read Neruda's poetry. And keep your loved ones close.
