Book Description

January 27, 2009

Sex. After. Baby.

These three words are spoken in hushed voices over playdates and at playgrounds. But while we may whisper them to our closest girlfriends, or joke about them after one too many beers with the guys, when it comes to talking with our partners about what's really going on (or not going on, as the case may be) in our child-proofed bedrooms, more and more of us find ourselves tongue-tied and tiptoeing. Are you part of the "sleepless, sexless" club?

You just might be, if

  • You'd rather just go to bed than go to bed with your partner.
  • The mind-blowing sex you once had now just blows.
  • The TV is turned on more than you are.
  • A playdate sounds better to you than yet another bad date night.
  • The baby gets more kisses and cuddles than you do.
  • You're beaten down from always having to initiate sex.
  • Foreplay has become chore-play.
  • "Let's get it on" are now fighting words.

But it doesn't have to be this way. According to bestselling author Ian Kerner, Ph.D., and "naughty mommy" Heidi Raykeil, it really is possible to do the hokey pokey and keep up the hanky panky. Ian and Heidi often bring very different perspectives, but they agree that sex matters . . . a lot. It's the glue that holds couples together and keeps lovers from becoming simply roommates or co-parents. Funny and frank, Love in the Time of Colic will help parents take the charge out of this once-taboo subject, and put it back where it belongs—in the bedroom.

I'm a new mommy (Wendy was born a massive, beautiful eight pounds seven ounces in May), and I'll be frank: my sex drive was feeling a little under the weather. Every time my husband George (a firefighter, so hardworking and such a catch) would come home from work, he'd stuff the leftovers into his mouth, climb into bed with me, and then he'd give me that nudge. Ladies, you know what nudge I'm talking about - the "let's make love" nudge. But I was exhausted and feeling just plain unsexy from chasing Wendy around all day. So I'd just fall asleep and leave Frank unsatisfied. To quote the Love Guru himself - and not Mike Meyers, but Ian Kerner - "foreplay had become chore-play."

THEN one day I read Love In The Time of Colic - I was a huge fan of his last book, Passionista: The Empowered Woman's Guide To Pleasuring a Man, so I figured, what the heck, I'll check it out. And EVERYTHING CHANGED!!! Kerner's sex tips are super easy to follow, and most of them are emotionally driven, as well, so you can start your changes from the inside out. Little changes made all the difference: after reading Love In The Time Of Colic, I'm a changed woman. When I push Wendy's stroller around there's a sexy sashay in my step; once I put Wendy to bed I immediately start to light some candles and run a hot bath. What can I say, Kerner: you've changed my life!!!!!!! This advice is so indispensible, truly a must-read for any couple. I immediately bought it for all my friends who aren't single!!!! (And when they eventually get married, you know what their baby shower gift will be!)

Thanks to Ian Kerner, Wendy's little brother is on his way. A MUST-HAVE!

What a great book - one of Dr. Kerner's best! New parents often face many challenges (sleep among them) and I applaud the others for this funny, cute, candid and practical guide to having better sex again after having a baby. As a sex educator, I recommend this book to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad I read this book! February 2, 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is a must-read for anyone who who is married with kids. My wife and I are both 42 and we're blessed with two fantastic kids, ages 7 and 14 months. Things between us had cooled off recently (again), and while I wasn't thrilled about it, I understood that it was normal, so I accepted it. Thank God a friend of mine recommended this book to me a few weeks back! It honestly has initiated a huge change in my life and my relationship with my wife. I realized that things didn't have to be that way! I can still be just as passionate with my wife as I was in college when we both went to the same school and I'd blow off studying to spend an amazing night with her in her apartment. I wake up everyday now for work looking forward to the night that lies ahead. This is the happiest I've been in years. I've even started going to the gym again so I can get back into shape and look good for my wife! This book has been a breath of fresh air for me. If you've come to expect less pleasure and enjoyment from your life with your spouse since you've had kids, you gotta give it a read.
