Biography

The O'Jays were one of the most popular and successful bands of the Philadelphia Soul genre in the 70s. Thanks to top songwriting and production team Gamble & Huff, they had a string of memorable hit singles, and multiple gold and platinum albums.

First forming in 1958 as the Triumphs, it took a long time for the band renamed The O'Jays to attain success. In the mid-60s they had a number of minor… Read more in Amazon's O'Jays Store

Editorial Reviews

In a career that stretches back almost half-a-century, The O'Jays have racked up a staggering 57 US R&B chart entries including 9 number 1's. This 40 track 2 CD set is a superb introduction to legendary soul vocalists now into their 5th decade. Compilation & sleeve notes by Charles Waring of Blues & Soul, Mojo & Record Collector. Features 'Used To Be My Girl' which was not on the Sony domestic single disc of the same name, but both 'Love Train' and 'Back Stabbers' are included here in live versions only. Music Club. 2005.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definitive collection from P.I.R.'s flagship group., January 14, 2007

This is the most comprehensive collection of The O'Jays Philadelphia International recordings. During their fifteen-year association with Gamble and Huff's legendary label (1972-87) The O'Jays made music history and this double-CD set is an excellent anthology. Not only does it feature the charted hit singles--it also features some lesser-known LP tracks. Get it if you don't yet have it!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best overall philly international era ojays collection, June 14, 2008
This review is from: Love Train-Best (Audio CD)
now there are quite a few compilations with the O'jays on Philly international but this one for my money is the best. all the known jams and album tracks. remember back in the day when you had those album jams which were bigger in your block than what radio was shoving down your throats? well those kind of cuts are on here. those classic O'jays vocals and harmonys are all here and the music is timeless along with the production and arrangments.

4.0 out of 5 stars The O'Jays - Love Train: The Best of, November 24, 2011

This review is from: Love Train-the Best of (Audio CD)
They say that "good things come to those who wait," and I certainly have waited a long time for there to be an ideal compilation by the mighty O'Jays. This double CD contains the specific tracks of choice that means much to me from the legendary trio.

The soothing "Darlin' Darlin' Baby (Sweet Tender Love)" and the R & B standard "Use Ta Be My Girl" were mainstream classics while the jubilant "Sing a Happy Song" was an R & B top 10 hit with a catchy chorus.

Recently, while listening to streaming internet radio, I heard for the first time a song that struck me as a hit and somehow never registered on local radio in 1983. The vocals were definitely that of the O'Jays, but the musical style fits that of the renowned producer Kashif. "Put Our Heads Together" is the name of the track produced by Keni Burke, and it is not available on any O'Jays CD but this compilation alone.

After learning that Amazon sells "Love Train: The Best of The O'Jays" (2005) which contains not only "Put Our Heads Together," but the other three nostalgic tracks that I wanted, I knew this compilation was the one for me!
