Finally--A true country roots man,
By Kevin (TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Love Trip (Audio CD)
I heard the song "Love Trip" on the radio, and then I saw the video. I was very impressed, so I just received the album a few days ago from Amazon. Wow...this thing is incredible. There is not one bad song! Every tune is rootsy, down to earth, heartfelt material. The thing that struck me was how "positive" every song is. My favorites are "I just want my baby back" and "All I've got to say". Jerry is not only a great singer, but a wonderful writer as well. If your looking for a true country record, with great production, songs, voice and the whole package...this is it! If your a guy looking for some great songs to play your girl, then this is it. If your a girl looking for some songs to show your man how a woman should be treated...then this is it! Check out "Cactus In a Coffee Can"...if that doesn't sink your heart a little bit....I don't know what will.

Some Kickin' Country here!,

Jerry is in touch with the roots of country music and he sings with the experience of someone who's paid his dues. Several of these songs will get success on the air. If you listen to All Hell's Breaking Loose and don't want to dance, well your heart might not be beating. Great album

He's Got "The Look",

Nashville finally has a young star to re-focus the thing that makes Nashville smashville. That thing is Virgin Records new artist Jerry Kilgore! Put a pot of coffee on and play him early in the morning and you can thank God in heaven that Scott Hendricks produces country music. Jerry cuts songs that make the old faded and jaded Nashville studio musicians remember how it feels to get all excited again. There are 12 songs on this "Love Trip" recording but I personally claim "Dangerous"...and "Don't Tell Me"....as my goodest ones and I'll fight you if you try to take them.

One of the best debut albums I've heard yet.,

Well I wasn't too sure about this one when I first bought it, I guess I was a bit nervous when I first stuck it in my cd player. Well when the first song played I was taken aback. Wow, this sounds like old country.. it's good to hear that.. and he's got a great voice on top of that. The first song "I Just Want My Baby Back" has a wonderful feel to it, it's got a nice traditional feel, and it almost sent me right into heaven. The second song happens to be that debut single he had, "Love Trip" which is a great song. "The More I Love You" is a nicely moving love song. "All I've Got to Say" is yet another song that I like the general sound that this album evokes. "The Look" and "Don't Tell Me You're Not In Love" are other songs that have that great sound to it. Unfortunately there are several songs on here that are rather disappointing, namely "It's Dangerous With You On My Mind", "All Hell's Breakin' Loose", "If A Man Ain't Thinkin'(About His Woman)", and "The Real Thing". Now that may seem like a lot of songs, but the very last track on here, "Cactus In A Coffee Can" is one of the best songs I've heard recently. It's one of the few that had me in tears when it was playing. It is one of the most beautifully written and preformed songs that has come out in the past several years. I would reccomend this CD even just for the last track, but the rest of the CD has a wonderful feel to it. This guy should be a star....

When I met him he said, "I'm gonna make it!",
By Carol (Hawaii) - See all my reviews

I met Jerry in 1989, in North Carolina when he sang for a band called New West. He said he was gonna make it.....and well!! It was just this past Christmas for the heck of it I looked under K in a cd selection bin and saw his CD. Of course, I bought it, and it is awesome! The whole cd just flows. My favorite is.. If A Man Ain't Thinkin' Bout His Woman this song actually makes you wonder. Cactus In A Coffee Can is a very well written song that touches even the toughest heart. It will give you chills. Love Trip is a fun, catchy tune that is an excellent two stepper. His voice is amazing and still sounds the same, and he looks as if he hasn't aged at all. There are more songs than this that have his name on them. Jerry were waiting for album 2.

Well, here's where the rubber meets the road. All of us traditional fans who have been begging for new artists who sing it our way, our chance has arrived with Jerry Kilgore. Just like his track number 8 states, he's "The Real Thing." Recognized as a talented songwriter for years (remember Tracy Byrd's "Love Lessons"), Kilgore finally gets his chance to take the reigns. We get to hear a lot of classic Kilgore lyrics with seven of the twelve tracks penned by Jerry. The other five also written by some of Nashville's best were obviously chosen with great care and make this a well-rounded package. While everybody easily got caught up in the title track, "Love Trip", do some digging and you'll find tracks that would have kept Kilgore at the top of the charts for weeks on end in the golden age of country. Although we enjoyed listening to the CD all of the way through, there are a few tracks which we couldn't help but keep on, "repeat." These songs included, "I Just Want My Baby Back", "All I've Got To Say", "The More I Love You", "The Real Thing" and "The Look". We know they're good when we've got the words down after the first few plays. With every listen of these tracks, I kept trying to figure out who he sounds like. Every now and then you hear a bit of Strait or Haggard maybe. But then I figured it out. Jerry Kilgore reminds me of a whole era of vintage country music. He has taken his influences and melded them into his own style. With Love Trip, Jerry Kilgore has met his goal of releasing a CD that is good for today and tomorrow. We'd like to add yesterday to that list. If you call yourself a traditional country music fan, go get this one today!

A writer who can't convert to singer,
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Trip (Audio CD)
Jerry just does not have a voice that stands out, and the instrumentals lack energy. After hearing some of the songs that he wrote for others, I was surprised at how cliched the songs on his own album are. I liked "If A Man Ain't Thinking 'Bout His Woman," though. At least he keeps his music country.
