5.0 out of 5 stars This was my first Engelbert CD, October 19, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Unchained (Audio CD)
I've always enjoyed Engelbert when I heard him on the radio, but for some reason I never even thought about buying any of his recordings. Then I saw the incredible PBS special "Love Unchained," and went out and bought this CD. I think the reason it's so good is that the artist himself is in his prime. I know, they all say that, but just listen to him sing any one of these songs or just the first WORD of "Love is a Many Splendored Thing." The best part though is that this CD isn't just a display of Engelbert's talent, it's a showcase for beautiful arrangements that you never get to hear anymore and it's produced with attention to detail. Also, the order of the songs is seamless, you won't be hitting the skip button on your remote when you listen to this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS IS "ENGELBERT" UNCHAINED......, March 9, 2000
This review is from: Love Unchained (Audio CD)
THE KING OF ROMANCE, MASTER OF HIS DOMAIN, DOES IT ONCE AGAIN. THIS TIME, A LARGE ORCHESTRA IS BACKING HIM AND THE MELODIES HE SINGS JUST BECOME MAGIC! IN PARTICULAR, "SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES" TO ME IS ONE OF THE BEST ARRANGEMENTS I HAVE EVER HEARD. ENGE REALLY SHOWS THE RANGE OF HIS VOICE AS WELL AS HIS SPECIAL KIND OF PHRASING. I CAN'T EVEN TELL WHEN HE TAKES A BREATH, HE DOES IT WITH SUCH FINNESS...THIS CD IS SURELY ONE TO ADD TO YOUR COLLECTION AND LISTEN TO IN THE QUIET OF THE EVENING. IT HAS SO MANY BEAUTIFUL SONGS ON IT - YOU COULD LISTEN FOREVER.....ENJOY!

Englebert is one of last great Romantic Singers of the past century. There are few singers with his ability to caress a phrase and bring it into your heart with the shear majesty of his booming baritone voice. Just thrill to how he soars to the high notes in "Unchained Melody", and "Smoke Gets in your eyes." I'm sure Jerome Kern himself would give him a standing ovation!Buy this one, it'll give you pleasure for years to come.

Anyone who loves music would also be pleased to smiling while listening to this gifted performer's superb treatment of classics from Billy Eckstine, Nat King Cole and others. It's just great.

I have enjoyed other of Engelbert Humperdinck's recordings over the years, but never considered myself a fan. I only happened onto his live performance of these songs one evening on the local public broadcasting channel. And, what a treat it was.

I agree with another reviewer, too, that the live performance (now on DVD) just must be seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars sumptuous and melodic, November 20, 2004
This review is from: Love Unchained (Audio CD)
This is a fantastic collaboration between Engelbert and Bebu Silvetti, whose lush, gorgeous arrangements and musical direction complement Engelbert's voice so well. Silvetti, a familiar name to Latin music fans because of his work with superstars like Luis Miguel and Rocio Durcal, creates his magic with these melodious songs, most of them classics, which are tailor made for Engelbert's romantic style, and beautiful baritone voice.

Recorded in 1995, nearly three decades after Engelbert hit the big time with "Release Me" in 1967, his voice is as smooth and rich as ever, and his interpretations nothing short of wonderful, with perhaps more depth than back in the days when he was, along with Tom Jones, one of the biggest headliners in show bussiness; favorites for me are his phenomenal take on "Unchained Melody", and a lovely film theme song not heard enough these days, "Love is a Many Splendored Thing".

There's a great rendition of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay", and the one up-tempo song is "Such a Night", which has a good old rock & roll feel to it.

Bravo Engelbert and Bebu, for this terrific endeavor; it's a recording that gets better with each hearing, and makes a worthy addition to the Engelbert Collection.

Total playing time is 43'41.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Beauty, April 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Unchained (Audio CD)
I have never been so touched by an album in all my 50 years on this earth. Having the PBS Special Video is a bonus. "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" & "Stranger in Paradise" are the most enjoyable renditions I have ever heard. What a singer, what songs, what arrangements, what musicians! Everyone who appreciates beauty should own this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great voice and beautiful music!, December 20, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Love Unchained (Audio CD)
Love Unchained, sung by Mr. Engelbert Humperdinck and accompanied by the 60 piece orchestra of Mr. Bebu Silvetti, is the most beautiful recording I have heard in recent years. These two superb artists compliment one another, giving the listener a feeling of "elegance." His renditions of "Unchained Melody," Secret Love," and "Love is a Many Splendered Thing" are unforgettable. A previous recording, E. Humperdinck, Love in Concert/All of Me, does him an injustice. The music and choral backup overpower his beautiful voice.

"Love Unchained" contains some of the finest work ever done by Engelbert Humperdinck, and in my opinion his best CD from the 90s - so far... His versions of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "Love Is a Many Splendoured Thing" are the best I have ever heard! Engelbert's great voice really shines through on this album.
