Jessica Brody Love Under Cover Review,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Love Under Cover: A Novel (Paperback)
The whole thing was utterly boring for those of us who enjoyed the Fidelity Files for its undercover bits and missions. The disappearance of Ashyln ruined any chance the book had. Had I not gotten it free, I would have asked for a refund.

Spoilers.....
Like others, I loved The Fidelity Files and anxiously awaited the release of its sequel, Love Under Cover and pre-ordered it last summer. I was very disappointed in what I read. Initially it was hard to tell if Jamie was going to continue to be Jennifer's love interest because she didn't seem to really be into him. I was okay with that though because he had given her an ultimatum of continuing with her fidelity inspections or he was walking. When he met her, she was a fidelity inspector and that is who he fell in love with. Yet, for him to continue to be her boyfriend, he expected her to give it up. Since she owned the business, he allowed her to continue to work there but he put limitations on what she could do there - and she let him! Then he tested her and walked out on her because she 'failed his test'. At that point I thought she was going to get her backbone back but she didn't. She went to see him to beg him to take her back but he had already moved on. So she gave away her business and moved away. It looked like she had the potential to redeem herself but Jamie had gotten wind of the fact that she was "out of the business" and came to take her back - with stipulations and conditions. If she'd told him to take a flying leap, I would be rating this book a 5 but the fact that she took him back, well, I can't. The message I got from this story is that it's okay for men to treat women like crap and control them and that, as women, we're lucky to have a man care enough about us to treat us that way. The writing was great but the story itself was lacking. It just puts a message out there that I can't get behind and I was so disappointed in it.

As I am already a huge fan of the Fidelity Files The Fidelity FilesJessica Brody's first novel, I had high expectations for Love Under Cover Love Under Cover: A Novel. I absolutely could not put Love Under Cover down - whenever I had a moment to read, even if it was just a page or two, I immediately got absorbed into the life of Ashlyn/Jennifer.
This book is not just your ordinary Chick Flick. It had so much more depth and insight into what fidelity and infidelity means and what it does to a human being and those around he or she. It was not at all cheesy but sophisticated and philosphical at times too. Jennifer/Ashlyn grew tremendously in this book and Ms. Brody did an incredibly job allowing her readers to truly understand this character. At the end of the book, you felt you were one of her best friends... you wanted to her change - to make her life better - and her transgression was played out perfectly, This book is a must read. From Los Angeles to Cabo to Paris... a book about the struggle of love and the stuggle of learning about one self.

I have been lucky enough to read both books in this series and have thoroughly enjoyed both of them.
I have to say that author Jessica Brody certainly has a way of taking a subject that is a very hot issue in our day - infidelity and kind of turned it on its ear by creating a whole novel that is based around it. Although this book is quite chick litty, I have to say that part of me, while reading this novel, felt a little sad that somehow we have come to a point in life where infidelity is such a big issue that we write entire novels on it. Of course, this book is written for laughs and I should not be taking the entire subject quite so seriously - I mean, "Jennifer" makes her living off of infidelity - however, what really makes this book work is the premise that Jennifer has seen so much infidelity - how can she believe in true love? What is it they say about the shoemaker being shoeless? or something like that? This book is written with great affection and humour and I thorougly enjoyed it.

I didn't have a chance to read the first book but I was really curious check out this book when I heard about it. With such a timely topic (I mean they have reality TV shows based on this premise!) I figured it had to be pretty interesting. I wasn't wrong, Love Under Cover is genuine chick-lit fun!
To me Jen symbolizes a whole generation of kids who will have issues with commitment and fidelity. With the rate of divorce these days and the percentage of people who cheat on their spouses I imagine fidelity inspectors will be a booming job market. Her job, her new finance and her relationship with her womanizing father make Jen's life a little more complicated than she would like. Throw in commando Barbie wedding planner and things really get crazy! If you are looking for a fun, well written read that will hook you from the very first page you've found it here! Pick it up for the winter holidays, cuddle up, read and enjoy!

After reading the Fidelity Files, i could not wait to read Brody's next book to see what happened with Jennifer/Ashlyn's personal life as well as with the Hawthorne agency. Love Under Cover sucked me right in and i couldn't put it down! If you have a cross country flight and need to be highly entertained for several hours then Love Under Cover should definitely be in your carry on bag! The characters that work at the Hawthorne agency were all well developed and really made the reader feel as if (s)he knew them personally. i loved how each chapter was a new adventure in the life of a fidelity tester intertwined with the protagonist's own story. If you like Emily Giffin, Sophie Kinsella or Jane Green, then you will love this book. I am sooo looking forward to Brody's next novel!

Jennifer Hunter was former bank executive before discovering her true calling of being a fidelity inspector.
She did that for several years before meeting Jamie Richards, her current boyfriend. After becoming serious with Jamie Jennifer told him that she would give up testing men personally and started the Hawthorn Agency. The Hawthorn Agency has both men and women test to see if a significant other will cheat. Things come to a head for Jennifer and the Hawthorn Agency while Jennifer was supposed to be on a romantic post-engagment trip with Jamie. One of her operatives got arrested for prostitution forcing Jennifer to do an assignment herself. Shortly after this Jamie finds out that Jennifer has been doing several assignments and things come to a head between the two. Jennifer contacts her father (one of the reasons why she became a fidelity inspector in the first place) and the two move to Paris. What happens between Jennifer and Jamie? What became of the Hawthorn agency? Read Love Under Cover |
